When setting up a network, each computer can be configured individually or in large numbers remotely by a system administrator If the computer does not already have an Ethernet card, one must be installed Even though the computer is intended to be used over a wireless connection, the availability of a standard Ethernet port on the computer will facilitate the initial configuration of the AP, which is discussed in 7, Wireless Security Briefly, a cable connection between a computer and AP enables the user to set the configuration of the AP using a graphical interface After the initial configuration, the cable is removed and the AP is cabled to a hub The computer can then communicate with the AP over the wireless link and gain access to the LAN Furthermore, the availability of a standard Ethernet port gives the user more flexibility on where the computer is used If a desktop computer is moved out of the range of an AP, for example, the only recourse might be to plug it into an available RJ45 jack Likewise, if a notebook computer is used at a different location where no wireless connectivity exists, the standard Ethernet port might have to be used, and if that is not available, a dial-up connection would be the last resort Mobile professionals, in particular, will appreciate a notebook computer that is fully equipped to take advantage of any connectivity option Install the Card If the computer does not come with Ethernet capability, a card must be installed while the computer is off When powering up the computer with the card installed, Windows will usually recognize the new hardware and automatically install the appropriate network card drivers (see Figure 3-2) If the drivers cannot be found, Windows will prompt the user to insert the manufacturer s disk so the drivers can be installed IP Settings By selecting Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and clicking on Properties, the user can set the IP address, subnet mask, default gateway, and Domain Name Server (DNS) server addresses (see Figure 3-3) In the corporate environment, IP addresses will likely be assigned to computers at the time they log onto the network from a Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) server If they are not assigned, a static IP address must be entered, which is permanently assigned to the computer The subnet mask will usually be set to 2552552550 The default gateway is the IP address of the router, cable/DSL modem, or network appliance that provides access to the Internet

Two DNS server addresses are required: one primary (preferred) and the other secondary (alternate) The DNS makes the translations between plain names, such as Amazoncom, and their assigned 32-bit IP addresses, such as 20717118116 This translation capability makes it easy for users to navigate the Internet, so instead of memorizing 20717118116, users only need to enter Amazoncom in the browser s command line Two DNS addresses must be entered because if the primary DNS server fails, the secondary DNS server takes over Configure a Connection With Windows 95/98/ME, the user must go through a series of screens to properly configure the computer for networking These configuration screens differ slightly depending on which version of Windows is being used, but they essentially prompt the user for the same information

With Windows 98, for example, the user starts by specifying the client type Because the network is based on Windows, the user must add Client for Microsoft Networks as the primary network logon (refer to Figure 3-2) Because the main advantage of networking computers is resource sharing, the user can choose to share both printers and files The user does this by clicking on the File and Print Sharing button and choosing one or both of these capabilities Through file and printer sharing, each computer becomes a potential server However, the user may choose not to enable file sharing This is common in enterprise networks, where shared directories and files reside on servers and are password protected according to the division, department, workgroup, project, or other scheme Identification From the Identification tab of the dialog box, the user selects a unique name for the computer and the workgroup to which it belongs, as well as a brief description of the computer (see Figure 3-4) When others use Network Neighborhood to browse the network, they will see all the active computers on the network
