technology and the most recent changes to standards In addition to constant updates, wireless APs often require frequent configuration changes to reflect modifications in access and security policies Without a centralized approach, a technician would be required to separately configure each AP in the network, a process that could take as long as 30 minutes With a centralized management system, an administrator or technician could simply create a single configuration profile and automatically download it to all the APs in the network Computer Associates is among the network management vendors that have added wireless extensions to their products Unicenter is the company s flagship management platform It has been enhanced with modules that enable corporations to manage all 80211b usage on an enterprise-wide scale The products, Unicenter Wireless Network Management (WNM) and Unicenter Mobile Device Management (MDM), split the management of 80211 networking between APs and mobile devices They also treat 80211 networks as one part of the networking whole, which means that from a management viewpoint little difference exists between a traditional wired network and a new 80211 wireless network Together, WNM and MDM automate the management of 80211 wireless networks while adding capabilities not found in the average wireless network WNM, for example, has an advanced discovery capability that automatically finds APs and the devices that are connected to them With this information, WNM can then capture events on the devices to help administer quantify performance and availability In addition, WNM offers enhanced security, including intrusion detection, using existing security tools built into Unicenter Since the product is built on top of Unicenter, the number of APs that can be managed has few limits In theory, hundreds of thousands of networks can be managed using WNM Because of variances between APs, however, WNM will not automatically support every 80211b and 80211a AP on the market This is due to the 80211 specifications not yet providing a uniform management interface Unicenter MDM casts a wider net, supporting both 80211 devices and non-80211 devices MDM focuses on such aspects of device management as software delivery, asset management, and VPN management In addition, as most mobile devices do not have antivirus support, MDM will monitor potential virus issues on these devices, including viruses that are not native to the device but that can be passed on to a system where the virus can take root

With their ease of installation and portability, wireless networks are gaining popularity and creating new network troubleshooting issues for companies In addition to the standard capacity and access issues, administrators now face security and expandability concerns as well as the challenge of integrating wireless technology into existing LAN infrastructures Almost without exception, new wireless networks are connected to wire networks Until recently, wireless analysis offerings were limited, both in the type of troubleshooting information offered and in their lack of integration with traditional protocol analysis tools for wired networks Now tools offer wireless capabilities to ease the increasingly complex nature of network administrators jobs

Enterprise applications and mission-critical data that are essential to business operations rely on the availability and continued reliability of the corporate network But the introduction of wireless links to extend the corporate network adds complexity to network management, which requires the appropriate tools to manage, monitor, and troubleshoot the network The purpose of a network management system is to improve network availability (up time) and service reliability, centralize the control of network components, reduce staff time for administrative tasks, and contain operational and maintenance costs The network management system can effectively lower the cost and complexity of today s networks by providing a set of integrated tools that enable IT staff to quickly isolate and diagnose network problems The ability to analyze and resolve network problems from a central location is critical to the management of both network and personnel resources The minimum functional requirements of any network management system are as follows:
Fault management This function includes the detection, isolation, and correction of events that are responsible for abnormal network operation Fault management provides the means to receive alarms, determine the cause of a network fault, isolate the fault, and implement corrective action Configuration management This function is used for the setup, maintenance, and updating of network components Configuration management also includes the notification to network users of pending and completed configuration changes Accounting management This tracks network usage to detect inefficiencies, the abuse of network privileges, or unusual network activity, all of which are useful for planning network changes or growth Performance management This recognizes current or impending performance issues that can cause problems for network users Activities include the collection and analysis of statistics for determining baseline network performance, monitoring, and maintenance to ensure acceptable network performance Security management This includes the activities of controlling and monitoring access to the network and associated network management information It also includes controlling passwords and user authorization as well as collecting and analyzing security or access logs
Ideally, these and other functions should be available from the same network management system, which treats the entire network as a single
