Higher education campus networks tend to be far larger, though not necessarily more complex than K-12 networks, especially when the campus network uses an extensive set of IP-based applications, as illustrated at the Moss Point School District Higher education networks tend to span much greater distances, commonly covering hundreds of acres on the primary campus and nearly that much again in satellite campuses The value propositions for higher education are different from those of the K-12 space: n n n n Competitive advantage Building-to-building wireless connectivity Increased revenue generation Maximized use of restricted budgets

Colleges now compete heavily for the best students and faculty An enormous amount of money is at stake, commonly running into the billions of dollars for major fouryear institutions, from revenue generated not only from student admission, but from alumni donations Some college athletics programs generate millions of dollars for the school from television, radio, and other broadcasting revenues Students attending two- or four-year colleges fully expect not only wireless access on campus, but pervasive high-speed wireless for their mobile cell phones, laptop computers, and PDAs Relatively few of today s college students attend college without these handheld devices While the most recent cell phone usage data is not readily available, it doesn t require much observation to recognize that cell phone usage among colleges students has been pervasive for more than five years Wireless connectivity considerably improves collaboration among students, allowing them to post joint work projects and to access them from virtually any place where mobile cellular or WLAN is available In urban areas where colleges are prominent, it s no surprise to find an extensive array of WLAN hotspots at local coffee shops, sports venues, and certainly on the college campus This connectivity, of course, allows more than just mobile contact for an agile student population; it allows access to changes in curriculum and lecture location changes, classroom assignments, and homework, and offers remote access to enormous libraries Real-time connectivity with college professors has taken the place of many in-person visits to a scholar s office Texting is nearly as common, if not more common, than a voice call, both over WLAN and mobile cellular networks Most college students find that the smartphone or cell phone provides significant additional safety factors while in transit to and from parking lots and in between buildings during class sessions At the same time, however, handheld device usage also contributes to accidents while students are driving and even walking Incredibly, it s not uncommon for a person texting to step off a curb and into moving traffic As a result, cell phone use and texting are often banned in school zones It s not just the students who require pervasive wireless coverage, but also the professors and staff, who need both cell phone and the much higher-speed WLAN formats required to do their jobs In fact, wireless mobility is demanded by educational institutions to attract the top teaching talent, which attracts the largest amounts of research money That research money is of major importance to schools Few, if any, faculty members access the network by Ethernet cable alone While much research is completed on high-performance computing systems that are often tethered by vast fiber-optic systems, a great deal of project administration, lecturing via PowerPoint slides, and note-taking is achieved via laptop computers, nearly all of which today include a WLAN interface for connectivity
