Annex D: Encoding Format for Audio Algorithm G723

D1 General
G723 is specified in ITU Recommendation G7231, Dual-Rate Speech Coder for Multimedia Communications Transmitting at 53 and 63 Kbps The G7231 operates at either 53 or 63 Kbps Both rates are a mandatory part of the encoder and decoder The algorithm has a floating-point specification in G7231 Annex B, a silence-compression algorithm in G7231 Annex A, and an encoded signal bit-error sensitivity specification in G7231 Annex C Every 30 ms, G7231 emits either 160 or 192 bits, respectively, that characterize a voice sample with an additional delay of 75 ms due to lookahead A G7231 frame can be one of three sizes: 24 octets (63-Kbps frame), 20 octets (53-Kbps frame), or 4 octets The 4-octet frames are called SID frames and are used to specify comfort noise parameters There is no restriction on how these three frames are intermixed The two least significant bits (LSBs) of the first octet in the frame determine the frame size and codec type It is possible to switch between the two rates at any 30-ms boundary
D2 Audio Frame Format
The bits of a G7231 frame are formatted as shown in Figures 6-13 and 6-14 (see Tables 5/G7231 and 6/G7231) Within the fields of a data unit, later octets are more significant This is based on H324 bit order assignment and is the reverse of the RFC 791 convention With each octet, the bits are with the MSB on the left and the LSB on the right A G7231 encoded voice subframe consists of a single audio frame; the audio frame (30 ms per frame) is packetized into 20 or 24 octets

D3 Silence Insertion Descriptor (SID)
G7231 Annex A defines a VAD and CNG for use with G7231 It classifies each 30-ms sample as either active voice or background noise Active voice is encoded according to Figures 6-13 and 6-14 Background noise is encoded as a SID according to Figure 6-15 (see Table A1/G7231) SIDs are sent only intermittently, when an appreciable change is detected in the nature of the background noise
NOTE: A single SID subframe is carried in a primary subframe
