This chapter provides a synopsis of multiprotocol label switching (MPLS) features (deferring the main technical discussion on MPLS to 4, Features of MPLS ), and then focuses on quality of service (QoS) capabilities and approaches for packet networks in general and MPLS in particular Appendix A provides a short synopsis of basic Resource Reservation Protocol (RSVP) features Appendix B provides a description of diffserv based on RFC 2475 Two technical factors that have held back the deployment of voice over packet/voice over Internet Protocol (VoP/VoIP) on a broad scale are QoS considerations for packet networks and robust signaling in support of interworking with the embedded Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN), which is not going to go away any time in the foreseeable decade or two Business factors that have held back VoP deployment include the dearth of new applications and the all-but-missing economic analysis QoS is where MPLS can find its sweet technical spot in supporting voice applications The improved traffic management, the QoS capabilities, and the expedited packet forwarding via the label mechanism can be significant technical advantages to voice Table 3-1 provides a rationalization for the improved treatment of packets through an MPLS network compared to the traditional IP Figure 3-1 depicts a basic MPLS engine MPLS protocols enable high-performance label switching of packets Network traffic is forwarded using a simple label1 In an MPLS domain, when a stream of data traverses a common path, a label-switched path (LSP) can be established using MPLS signaling protocols At the ingress label-switched router (LSR), each packet is assigned a label and is transmitted downstream At each LSR along the LSP, the label is used to forward the packet to the next hop By combining the attributes of layer 2 switching
