You should find that, once Kerberos has been set up correctly, you can use passthrough authentication in your application definition file, even though your SQL Server is on a different machine than the IIS Server. We ve now covered most scenarios when it comes to authentication. Let s now look at how we can trim security permissions using LOB application-level permissions and entity-level permissions.
Permissions
One of the concerns about surfacing any form of data in a client application is security, especially if we re accessing the database with a specific user account that has read access to every table in the database. This is the situation if you use RevertToSelf, which is what many BDC users do to get around the double hop issue. This in turn means that every user in SharePoint will have read rights to every table in the database. Fortunately, the BDC has provided a way to trim the permissions on the front end. Assume that we have one LOB system instance that s

made up of 10 entities with associations. It might be the case that User A should have Business Data Catalog Permissions permission to read all 10, or maybe he should only be able to read some of them. LOB System Permissions You can set the permission on the LOB system instance and then push down those permissions to each entity, or you can break Entity Permissions the inheritance and set specific permissions on each entity. You can also configure the permissions for the entire Business Data Figure 3.6 The three levels in which permissions can be applied in MOSS Catalog. This can be configured at three levels, as illustrated in figure 3.6. You can configure these permissions via the Shared Services Provider Administration page. Navigate to SharePoint Central Administration, and then select your SSP Administration page from the Quick Launch. On the bottom right side of the screen, you ll see the Business Data Catalog option, as shown in figure 3.7.
The Manage Permissions page on the LOB system
By editing the permissions, you can add each user or groups of users, and then select the required level of permission, of which there are four to choose from, as shown in figure 3.8: Edit Update and delete objects and create child objects. Users with this right on the Business Data Catalog itself can import application definitions. Applies to all objects. Execute Execute a method instance. Users with this right can view instances of an entity that has finder methods. Applies to method instances, which are descendents of entities. Select in Clients Select an entity when configuring Business Data Web Parts, columns, or other clients. Applies to entities. Set Permissions Applies to all objects.
