In figure 4.2, you can see a business data grid that has been configured to show the data from the Production.Products entity from the Adventure Works database. Once you ve configured the web part, depending on the number of columns that you returned in your entity, you re likely to have a wide web part, because the web part defaults to displaying every column and will grow to incorporate them. We can make an adjustment and choose which columns to display by clicking the Edit View link in the top right side of the web part. This link only displays when the web part page is in Edit mode. In the Edit view, you can specify which items you want to retrieve. Set your item limit, specify which columns you want to display, and set the sorting, filtering, and pagination options. In our example, we re going to reduce the number of columns to two, in order to simply display the ProductID and Name columns. Note that you can also set the Title column, which gives you an Edit Control Block menu on the specified column to link you to the Profile page, as shown in figure 4.3. Once you click the hyperlink or the View Profile menu item, you re taken to the Profile page that BDC creates for you. The Row ID is passed as a query string to the Profile page. The Profile page contains the Business Data Item Web Part and the Business Data Item Builder Web Part, which displays all of the columns and values in a column format for that particular row. The View Profile page can be seen in figure 4.4.

If you set up actions in your entity as well, these will also display in the Edit Control block for the Title field. Note that, as part of our BDC entity, we configured MSN and Google Search actions so that we can search the product name in Google, as shown in figure 4.5. You can also configure connections between the Business Data Web Parts. In the next section, we ll use two web parts to demonstrate web part connections. We ll explore the Business Data Item Web Part and the Business Data Related List Web Part.

We ve already seen the Business Data Item Web Part in action on the Profile page. But rather than being driven away from the web part page that contained your Business Data List Web Part, you may want to remain on the same page, but still view all of the columns for the selected row. This scenario would allow you to click a product name from the Business Data List Web Part, and then see detailed product information in the Business Data Item Web Part. To configure the Business Data Item Web Part, follow these instructions:
1 2 3 4
Click Site Actions, Edit Page on a web part page. In the Web Part zone on the right side of the page, click Add a Web Part. From the Business Data section, check the Business Data Item Web Part. Click the Open the Tool Pane link from within the Business Data Item Web Part. In the Type property, click the Address Book icon, and then select the entity that you require. (I m using Production.Product from the AdventureWorks database as an example.) Leave the Item property blank, as we ll pass through an item using Web Part Connections. Click OK. Click the Edit button in the Business Data List Web Part, and choose Connections, Send Selected Item To, Entity Name (in our case, Production.Product). Exit the Edit mode.
