Once you ve clicked OK, the crawl should begin to take place. The crawl has been known to generate errors at this point. Usually it s because the default SharePoint search account doesn t have the required permissions in the content database. You can set the search account via the Office SharePoint Server Search service properties in the Services snap-in on your server, as shown in figure 6.3.

To see whether your crawl failed, on the Edit Control block of the content source, choose View Crawl Log. This will tell you whether the crawl was successful, as shown in figure 6.4. Once you ve created the content source, you can move on to creating the search scope, which is useful if you want to search your entity independently of the other search scopes. The search scope is configured by following these steps:

Configuring BDC search
Once the scope has finished updating, you should see that it has some items in it. This should equal the number of rows in the entity. You can now test the results by performing a search in MOSS, although you ll see the results on the All Sites tab in the Search Center. In the next section, we ll create our own Search Results page in the Search Center that only displays the results of your entity. This is useful, as you could set up a tab to search all customers, and another tab to show all suppliers. Or you could have a tab for both, so that all the data from an application such as CRM is displayed under the same tab. The important thing is to separate your BDC data from regular SharePoint data and the other content sources. The next stage is optional but useful, and that s to build your own custom Search page.
Building a custom Search Results page
MOSS provides Search Results pages by default to show the results of People
Search or All Items search. It also provides a template so that you can create your own pages for displaying search results. The Search Results pages are created from a page layout called SearchResults.aspx, which lives in the Master Pages & Page Layouts gallery within your site collection. Every page layout in MOSS obtains its field controls from a content type. The content type used for the outof-the-box Search Results page is Welcome page. It s possible to create your own content type and page layout if you want to heavily customize the structure of the Search Results page. Content types can be created using features, code, or the user interface. Content types, page layouts, and features all deserve an entire chapter on their own, but because this would distract from the focus on BDC, we ll just talk about them in general in this section. You can, however, find documentation on all of them by downloading the SDK for MOSS (http://www.microsoft.com/
downloads/details.aspx FamilyID=6D94E307-67D9-41AC-B2D6-0074D6286FA9&displaylang=en).
First, we re going to explore the out-of-the-box Search Results page, and how to create it and wire it up by modifying the web parts and creating tabs within the Search Center. We ll then explore each of the web parts that make up the page in section 6.4. The reason for creating a separate Search Results page is to isolate our results from our LOB system to just one tab. This allows us to focus on results from the back-end database rather than mixing them up with results from documents, lists, and other scopes in MOSS. To create the custom Search page, follow these steps:
