example, if the currently logged-on user isn t a member of a Sales Person audience, she won t see sales items that are rolled up into a Content Query Web Part. To modify the target audience for the web part, choose Site Actions, Edit Page, click the Edit button in the web part, and choose Modify Shared Properties. You ll then see Figure 7.12 The Target Audiences property of a the Target Audiences property in figure 7.12. web part Another place in which you can use target audiences is within a content type based on the page content type. These content types are used to create page templates, so that information workers can create content pages. The first thing to do when you create a page layout is create a content type based on page. Note in figure 7.13 that page contains a Site column called Target Audiences. The Target Audiences field control can be placed on the page inside an Edit Mode Panel control when designing the page layout in SharePoint Designer. This means that an information worker who s creating the content can target the content page to an audience. The person reading the page wouldn t see the Target Audiences field, as it s inside the Edit Mode panel. This is illustrated in figure 7.14.

Summary
This chapter introduced the benefits of using user profiles within MOSS. It explained how users can modify their own profiles using My Site, which in turn allows them to become members of audiences. Audiences are created by administrators within the Shared Services Provider. It s possible to search for people using the People tab within the MOSS Search Center. To provide better audience targeting and searching, user profile properties can be created and mapped to a backend database, which will provide further profile information. This involves creating properties and mapping them to a column within an entity that s returned by the Business Data Catalog. Finally, we saw what type of information can be targeted, such as list items, web parts, and content pages. In this chapter, we didn t write any code! In the next chapter, we ll explore the BDC Object Model and the ApplicationRegistry namespace. This will give us the opportunity to get our hands dirty and learn the types of applications that we can write ourselves and still use the Business Data Catalog.
The ApplicationRegistry namespace
This chapter covers
Explaining the ApplicationRegistry namespace Creating a web service that exposes BDC data from your entity Writing a console application to consume the web service
What the Business Data Catalog can do out of the box is extremely powerful. Except for writing the application definition file by hand, it s extremely easy, too. But every company is different, and no matter how hard you try as a software developer, you ll never be able to satisfy every company s requirements. We now know that we can customize the BDC Web Parts with Microsoft Office SharePoint Designer (SPD). But sometimes that just isn t enough. With SPD, our hands are still tied to whatever operation SPD allows us to perform. So when we need real power, we have to turn to Visual Studio.NET. What can we do with BDC data that we can t do with SPD Well anything! If you need to
