WAP is an open specification, and is comparable to many other protocols used in existing Internet technology The major difference between WAP and any other set of protocols is that WAP is optimized for the restrictions of WAP devices WAP covers the application level (WML and WMLScript; collectively known as WAE, the Wireless Application Environment) and all of the underlying transport layers (WSP and WTP, WTLS, and WDP) The fact that the WAP Forum defines all of these protocols means that everything should interact without any problems The bearer level of WAP depends on the type of mobile network It could be SMS (Short Message System), CSD (Circuit Switched Data), GPRS (General Packet Radio Service), CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access), or any of a large number of possible data carriers Whichever bearer your target client is using, the development process remains the same the other levels are completely transparent to both the developer and user alike Table 5-1 shows the layers used for both the Web and WAP, just to point out how they are similar In actual fact, you will probably never have to refer to it again In WAP, you can consider WML to be the equivalent of HTML, which is used to describe the text content and the look of pages viewed in Web browsers For graphical content in WAP, the monochromatic graphics a WAP micro-browser should be able to display are WBMP images HTML is used to encapsulate both the form and content of a page, and modern Web pages are often created as works of graphic art Unfortunately, WML doesn t offer anything like that degree of control, and if you re expecting absolutely positioned pixel-perfect WAP pages, then you re going to be very disappointed

WAP devices and their characteristics are extremely varied from tiny mobile phone screens to larger PDA displays and WML makes a minimum number of assumptions about how the page will be displayed on the device s screen This means that although you can be fairly sure that the WML page will contain the content you originally wanted to display, the appearance of the content will depend on the device You can, of course, write separate code for each device, but as there are already hundreds of devices with more coming onto the market all the time, testing pages across all possible client devices is impossible Having said all that, most Web designers will find that writing in WML is really quite straightforward WML has been designed with the experience of HTML s evolution, and the end result is very workable

Writing WML Code
We ll first look at the basics of WML so that you can pick up the foundations easily Once you have gotten the basics, there is a mass of information out there on the Web that you can plug into to improve your expertise In the next few pages, we will develop a simple WAP site For the sake of originality and creativity, we will call it Hello World Keep in mind that the display screen of a mobile phone is smaller than that of a PC This means that most WAP sites and applications will actually be made up of a number of pages We ll see in a moment that the Hello World site is made up of two pages: the first page displays a message to click the Accept button; the second page displays our Hello World message
