This little gem will drive your television-addicted buddies off the deep end, especially when you use it during special sporting events or their favorite TV series This device works by injecting a highfrequency square wave directly into the composite video signal going into your TV from any source such as a VCR, DVD player or satellite decoder Sure, you could simply unplug the TV, but what fun would that be A true Evil Genius must wreak havoc in a sublime way, so as to make things look like they are simply not working properly, which is what this device will do The interference signal can be set for light fubarization, or all-out fubarization, so you can tailor the level of annoyance Now, I will leave the definition of the word Fubar up to you to figure out, but I will explain the details of the device at hand so you don t snafu the thing! You will need a little metal can called a clock oscillator as shown in Figure 4-9 A clock oscillator is a crystal-controlled oscillator that outputs a 5-volt square wave at a given frequency These oscillators only need a power and a ground connection, and will output a logic-level square wave with extreme precision, which is why they are used in many timing intensive devices such as computer mainboards, videocards, network adapters and most video appliances You can find these oscillators with frequencies between several kilohertz up into the many hundreds of megahertz, although for our use, a frequency between 500 kHz and 6 MHz will be optimal due to the frequency of the composite video signal Take a look at the extremely simple schematic shown in Figure 4-10, and you will see that our device simply feeds the output of the clock oscillator directly into the video signal through a current limiting resistor and a variable resistor that we can use to set the level of interference Since the oscillator requires 5 volts, I have included a 5-volt regulator for operation off a 9-volt battery, but if you wanted to run the unit off 4 AAA batteries and no voltage regulator instead, I would imagine that the oscillator would not complain too much about the extra volt The video in and out jacks are tied directly together so the device can be plugged in between the target TV and the video source These jacks can be male or female connectors depending on your intended use I made one of the jacks a female RCA type so that the video source could be removed from the back of the TV and inserted into

my device The other jack is actually a bit of video wire with a male RCA connector installed so the device can then be plugged back into the tagged TV This connector arrangement makes the unit very easy and quick to install on the target television set without needing any extra video cables So what does this thing do to the video signal Have a look at the fubared screen shown in Figure 4-11 and try to tell me who s winning the game! As you can see, the video signal becomes very blurry as you inject the output from the clock oscillator directly into the line I am using an oscillator with an output frequency of 18432 MHz

because this is the lowest frequency I could find in my junk box A composite video signal contains many complex waveforms at various frequencies and, depending on the frequency of the interference signal, you will be able to generate all sorts of annoying horizontal or vertical lines in the target video system If your frequency is too low, you may knock out the entire video signal, and if the frequency is too high, the TV may be able to simply ignore the erroneous information Of course, experimentation is the key since we are using parts to do things they were not intended to do in order to generate signals that should never occur The device is so simple that it can be built on to a bit of perforated board in a matter of minutes as shown in Figure 4-12, complete with the easily adjustable variable resistor and an on off switch The device can remain connected to the video system when not in use since it only interferes with the signal when it is turned on and the variable resistor is turned up a bit If you turn the fubarization knob a little bit, the lines will barely be noticeable, although a real video connoisseur may notice At full tilt, the screen will be so messed up, it will look like grandpa s black and white TV out at the cabin, and you will be lucky to make out anything more than basic blobs and
