back without a lot of force, it will probably have enough pulling power to release the triggering pin reliably every time Now you will need to make the pin that will hold the loaded pad in place and rest on the end of the solenoid plunger so that the plunger only needs to retract approximately oneeighth of an inch in order to make the pin fall out of the hole This process may sound complicated, but it is extremely easy to implement, and works much like the way a typical mousetrap works As shown in Figure 11-14, this locking pin is just a bit of metal that can fit through the shelf-bracket hole while it rests on the solenoid plunger when it is pulled only slightly from its housing I made my locking pin by filing down a piece of another shelf bracket, but you could make it from any bit of scrap metal you have laying around or even from an old kitchen utensil (fork prong) Also shown in Figure 11-14 near the hole where the shelf bracket enters the cage base is another bit of a shelf bracket fastened to the wood so the locking pin rests on it instead of directly against the wood This bit of metal is optional, but it does stop the locking pin from eventually wearing a hole in the wood as it is released in a violent manner when the solenoid pops its plunger out of the way To get the solenoid in the correct position so the locking pin will fit optimally, load the launch door,

and place the pin through the hole, then hold the solenoid in place and mark the screw holes Now you can carefully load your launch pad by forcing it all the way down and placing the pin through the hole on the shelf bracket attached to the launch pad while you let the other end of the locking pin rest under the ever-so-slightly retracted solenoid plunger Keep in mind that the loaded cage is like a mousetrap too much movement or jarring could set it off and, if your hand is in the way, you will remember not to do that again You now have the option of simply wiring a switch from the solenoid directly to the battery pack for manual operation, or adding a light-triggered switch to allow covert remote triggering of the solenoid Regardless of the method you plan to use, it s a good idea to start with the direct switch method first, since it will allow easy testing of the entire system, and in the end, you will need a master switch anyhow For proper solenoid operation, you will not get away with a 9-volt battery, or even a pair of 9-volt batteries wires for 18 volts, as there is simply not enough current available in such a small battery, resulting in a very weak solenoid pull A large 12-volt flashlight battery or a 12-volt pack made from eight 15-volt flashlight batteries will be needed to get this project up and running, and should yield hundreds of launches without a problem I chose the multiple D cell battery pack approach as shown in Figure 11-15, and had plenty of room to spare once the battery holders were screwed to the underside of the cage base The direct switch method is so simple that I will not bother with a schematic diagram, just wire the switch in series with the battery pack and solenoid so it is activated when the switch or momentary pushbutton is flipped to the on position With a good 12-volt alkaline power source, the solenoid plunger should have no problem at all retracting back into the coil to release the locking pin Have you spanked your hand with the flying launch pad yet No You will in due time The light-activated system is a bit more complicated than the single switch method, but not
