Installing Windows
Installing modern Windows operating systems has largely become an automatic process, but there are still many things that can go wrong, so the more familiar you are with the normal process, the easier it will be for you to determine the cause of installation problems Because the Windows 9x and Windows NT/2000/XP installation procedures are quite different, they are discussed individually in the following subsections Before starting any OS installation, you must ensure that your computer meets the minimum hardware requirements The minimum and recommended requirements for Windows 95, 98, NT 4, 2000 and XP are listed in Tables 9-1 and 9-2 Additional required hardware includes a 144-inch high-density floppy disk drive and keyboard A CD-ROM drive and a mouse are also required

The first challenge when installing an OS from scratch is that computers cannot boot without an OS of some kind How, then, can you get the computer started to install an OS if an OS doesn t already exist in the computer The answer is that you use the boot disk that came with the installation CD The Windows 9x boot disk contains drivers that will start the system and allow the computer to read from the CD To use the boot disk, insert the appropriate floppy disk and start the computer
