It is only in rare circumstances that you will have to use the Add Hardware Wizard to install drivers for Plug-and-Play devices This wizard is more commonly used to install device drivers for third-party (non-Plug and Play) devices that did not come with their own Setup utility It should be noted that some Plug-and-Play devices may be newer than the OS; therefore, the OS won t yet have the necessary drivers Follow the steps in Exercise 9-7 to install a third-party driver in Windows 98

Reinstalling and Replacing Drivers for Windows
If a device s driver becomes corrupted, you will need to reinstall it In some cases, you might want to replace a working driver with another driver For example, the manufacturer of a device could release an updated driver that is better than the one you are currently using, or you might decide to replace a generic Windows driver with a more sophisticated third-party driver To replace or reinstall an existing device driver, use the Windows Device Manager In Windows 9x and 2000/XP, right-click My Computer, select Properties, click the Hardware tab, and then click the Device Manager button View the appropriate device s Properties and elect to update the driver The Update Driver Wizard will launch Follow the on-screen instructions to replace a bad driver with a good one or to update the driver with one from another location You might need to restart the computer for the changes to take effect
