An important printer configuration is its spool settings If spooling is enabled, applications will write print jobs to the hard disk, where they will be picked up and handled by the OS Again, this allows the applications to resume work on other things more quickly To configure the printer s spool settings, select the Details tab in the printer s Properties window The Details window allows you to configure the printer s port and timeout settings Click the Spool Settings button The windows shown in Figure 9-28 will be displayed Enable spooling by selecting Spool Print Jobs So Program Finishes Printer Faster The alternative to spooling is to select the Print Directly to the Printer option If spooling is enabled, you will be able to select whether the printer begins printing after the first page is spooled or after the last page is spooled You will also be able to select the spool data format Enhanced Metafile Format (EMF) is the default Windows graphic-rendering language When you use EMF spooling, the printing application builds an EMF file representing the print job Windows sends this file to the printer, and the RAW option configures Windows to translate each print job into printer-specific code RAW mode sends data directly to the printer with no processing of file commands done in the printing subsystem EMF printouts look the same as RAW printouts, but not all printers can print EMF print jobs When this is the case, you should use the RAW option, although these print jobs will take longer because they must first be translated by the OS into a format the printer can understand

As a computer technician, you will likely be required to set up Windows systems and configure them for use The Windows installation programs are almost entirely automated, so it is a relatively simple matter to install or upgrade the OS However, you might need to do some preparation work to partition and format the disks Furthermore, you must be aware of the procedures for upgrading and dual-booting Windows because these are common OS configurations Once Windows is installed, it will be automatically loaded every time you start the computer You must be familiar with these boot processes so that you can pinpoint and troubleshoot boot problems For example, if a Windows 9x system is missing the WINCOM file, you know that the protected-mode boot phase cannot be carried out If the Windows 2000 BOOTINI file is corrupted, dual-booting cannot be enabled When there is a problem with the boot process, you might be able to start the computer using an alternate boot mode Safe mode, for example, will boot Windows with minimal drivers in the hopes that the faulty driver will be bypassed so that it cannot halt the boot process If Windows is too badly damaged to boot in an alternate mode, you can start the computer and try to repair the problem by booting with a boot or startup disk These disks can be made during the OS installation or within the OS itself Equally important to the proper function of Windows is the configuration of device drivers, applications, and printers Because Windows supports Plug and Play, many devices will be automatically detected and configured at startup However, you will need to use the Add Hardware utility or a third-party Setup program to install non-Plug-and-Play drivers The same is true for third-party Windows utilities These must be installed using either the manufacturer s Setup program or the Add/Remove Programs utility
