Let s play with our alternate IMAP4 virtual server a little more Our OE client on Box16 is still configured to use 172161124 as its IMAP server Start OE on Box16 again Now switch to Box14 and select the Current Sessions node under Alternate IMAP4 Virtual Server in System Manager (Figure 238)

What if you decide that user Administrator is unauthorized to connect to alternate IMAP4 virtual server on Box14 Right-click on the user in the Details pane of System Manager and select Terminate to end the user s session The session disappears from the Details pane Go back to Box16 where OE is still running and select Tools IMAP4 Folders The folder list is downloaded successfully, and clicking F5 in System Manager on Box14 shows that a new session has been created for the user This simply shows that terminating the user was a soft, not a hard, action; that is, the user is disconnected but can reconnect if there are no other restrictions

You can also terminate all user sessions for a virtual server, but this is not recommended except in an emergency because users may lose their work
Default SMTP Virtual Server
Let s examine one particular virtual server in more detail, namely the default SMTP virtual server This virtual server is particularly important because SMTP is the underlying message delivery mechanism in Exchange and the message transport mechanism for the Internet We won t cover it in exhaustive detail but simply point out some highlights of its configuration
NOTE
You can create additional SMTP virtual servers on an Exchange server, but in most cases this will not be required unless you are hosting multiple domains on a single Exchange server, an advanced topic that is beyond the scope of this book
Virtual Servers
Configuring the Default SMTP Virtual Server
Open System Manager on Box14 and select the SMTP container under the Protocols container for Box14 This displays a node representing the Default SMTP virtual server in the Details pane Open the Properties Sheet for this virtual server Let s examine some of these settings:
Walkthrough
General tab We ve covered IP address, connection limit, and connection time-out settings earlier in this chapter The only new setting concerns protocol logging for the virtual server, which we ll discuss in 24 Access tab We ve covered the first three portions of this tab earlier in this chapter The only new thing here is Relay Restrictions, which lets you control whether the virtual server can be used by external mail systems to relay messages to third parties Click the Relay button to display the Relay Restrictions box (Figure 239) By default, mail relaying is disabled except for remote servers that successfully authenticate with your server You can grant or deny relaying to all remote hosts and then deny or grant this privilege according to IP address, subnet, or DNS domain
Figure 239 Configuring relay restrictions for an SMTP virtual server
23
Messages tab You can specify maximum message size, maximum session size, maximum number of messages per session, and maximum number of recipients per message for all messages and sessions handled by this virtual server (Figure 2310) You can also specify how undeliverable mail is handled by sending copies of all NDRs to a specified email address (usually an administrator or the postmaster account for the organization), a Badmail directory where undeliverable messages are placed when the NDRs they generate can t reach the sender (for example, when spammers generate messages with phony IP addresses), and you can forward all incoming mail with unresolved recipients to another mail server in your organization that can handle it
