Name The name of the queue as described previously Connection state The current state of the queue, which can be: Active The queue currently contains messages that are being passed to the appropriate link queue for outbound routing Frozen The queue can receive messages but cannot route or deliver them Ready The queue is ready to receive messages for routing and delivery

Remote The queue is waiting for the remote SMTP host to issue a TURN/ETRN command to initiate dequeuing of its messages Retry The queue has attempted to deliver or route messages, has failed, and is waiting to try again Scheduled The queue is waiting for a scheduled connection time for routing or delivering messages Time of Submission of Oldest Msg When the oldest messages was submitted to the queue by a client

Total # of Msgs This indicates the total number of messages waiting for delivery or routing in the queue Total Msg Size (KB) The total size of all queued messages If this becomes too large, it could fill available disk space and bring messaging to a standstill Time of Next Connection Retry When the queue is in a Retry state, this field will indicate when the next attempt will be made to form a connection with the remote SMTP host and route the message to its destination
Below is a summary of some of the tasks that an administrator can perform on SMTP queues using System Manager and when they should be done:
Enabling and disabling connections You can enable or disable connections for all queues on a given SMTP virtual server by right-clicking the Queues node and selecting Enable | Disable All Connections When queues are disabled, they cannot route or deliver messages to their destinations You might do this if you are having problems with your server and plan to troubleshoot Forcing a connection You can force a queue to change to Active state by right-clicking on the queue in the Details pane and selecting Force Connection You might do this to force delivery of messages in a queue whose current state is Retry or Scheduled Enumerating messages in a queue Enumerating messages causes individual messages to be displayed in a given queue To enumerate messages 100 at a time for a particular queue, right-click on the

queue and select Enumerate 100 Messages Repeat to enumerate additional messages, or right-click and select Re-enumerate to refresh the current list You can also create a custom filter for enumerating specific types of messages in the queue Freezing and unfreezing a queue You can freeze a queue by rightclicking on the queue and selecting Freeze All Messages This prevents messages from leaving the queue but allows new messages to enter the queue You might do this if the WAN link is down and you want to prevent NDRs from being generated while the link is under repair You can also freeze individual messages in a queue by first enumerating the messages in the queue and then right-clicking on the desired message in the queue and selecting Freeze Deleting messages from queues Once messages are enumerated and displayed in a queue, you can delete selected messages by right-clicking and selecting either: Delete All Messages (No NDR) Deletes all messages in the queue and does not send NDRs to senders Delete All Messages (Send NDR) Deletes all messages in the queue and sends NDRs to senders You can also selectively delete individual messages in the queue and return or not return an NDR to the sender
Try this: disable the network connection (pull the LAN plug) between Box16 and the other servers in your testbed deployment Start OWA on Box16 and log on to seauser s mailbox Send a message to vanuser@mtitcom Then enumerate the queues for the default SMTP virtual server on Box16 In which queue is the message Delete the message from the queue
