We re almost finished we just have to prepare the mtitcom domain for Exchange 2000 and then upgrade Box82 from Exchange 55 to 2000 To prepare the domain, we use the DomainPrep utility, which is run by running Exchange 2000 Setup using the /domainprep switch DomainPrep needs to be run once for each domain that will contain Exchange 2000 servers or will host Exchange 2000 recipients such as mailboxenabled user accounts DomainPrep creates security groups and permissions necessary for Exchange servers to modify user attributes as required Log on to Box81 with an account that belongs to the Domain Admins group (we ll use the default domain Administrator account again) Insert the Exchange 2000 CD, open a command prompt window, and type <CD-drive>\Setup\I386\Setup /domainprep The welcome screen for the Exchange 2000 Installation Wizard appears once again Walk through the steps of the wizard the way you did for ForestPrep This should be pretty quick

Upgrading from Exchange 55
Upgrading Exchange 55 to Exchange 2000
Let s do an in-place upgrade of our Exchange 55 SP3 server Box82 to Exchange 2000 Before you begin, check to make sure that Internet Information Services (IIS) is installed on the machine, including the SMTP and NTTP services If not, select Control Panel Add/Remove Programs Add/Remove Windows Components select Internet Information Services Next insert Windows 2000 SP1 CD and Windows 2000 Advanced Server CD as prompted OK to install all the IIS services required by Exchange 2000 This extra step will be needed if your original Windows NT server BOX82 did not have IIS installed on it Insert the Exchange 2000 CD in Box82 and run Setup from the \Setup\I386 directory to start the Exchange 2000 Installation Wizard On the Component Selection screen of the wizard, certain components will be preselected and displayed as having Upgrade status this cannot be altered, but components can be added if needed Click Next and specify the password for the Exchange 55 site service account on Box82 Continue through the wizard using the defaults until Exchange 2000 is installed Then complete the walkthrough by using Outlook on a client computer to connect to a user s mailbox and send mail

APPENDIX A
EXCHANGE RESOURCES ON THE WEB
There are a great many useful sites for Microsoft Exchange on the Internet These sites range from independent to vendor affiliated, from online communities to links pages, from news sources to collections of step-by-step tutorials Most of these sites now include coverage of Exchange 2000, and a few are devoted exclusively to it This appendix is a sampler of twelve different sites that I have found useful for the administration and development of Exchange solutions A brief description of each site is included with the relevant URL
