Summary
We ve spent some time looking at how to manage Exchange recipients and address lists Along the way we ve learned how to use the Exchange administration tool called ADUC, which is also the main Windows 2000 administration tools for administering objects in AD We ve briefly introduced another Exchange tool, System Manager, in our discussion of address lists In 9, we ll take a bird s-eye view of System Manager and what it is used for

In previous chapters we ve looked at managing Exchange recipients using the ADUC console We ve also looked at how to manage address lists using System Manager, another Exchange administration tool This chapter looks more deeply at the System Manager console, provides an overview of its use, and introduces a number of new concepts that will be covered in more detail later on In other words, this chapter provides a kind of bridge between earlier material and more advanced topics on Exchange administration This chapter has only one walkthrough:
Exploring the Exchange organization hierarchy
System Manager
If ADUC is the primary tool used for administering Exchange recipients (users, contacts, and groups), then System Manager is the tool used for managing almost everything else Specifically, you use System Manager to:
Configure global settings for all Exchange servers in your enterprise Create and manage address lists, address templates, and recipient policies for Exchange recipients Create and manage system policies for Exchange servers, mailbox stores, and public folder stores throughout your organization Create and configure information stores and protocols Configure routing of messages between different sites and routing groups Create and manage public folders throughout your organization Install and configure connectors for connecting Exchange to other mail systems
About the only things you don t use System Manager for are:
Migrating mail accounts from other messaging system (use Migration Wizard instead) Identify and merge multiple accounts in AD that refer to the same user (use AD Cleanup Wizard instead) Back up and restore Exchange configuration information and information store data (use Backup instead)
