s the number of universes in your deployment increases, there are a number of ways you can minimize universe maintenance As users access multiple universes, built by different designers, you need to ensure that the interface is as consistent as possible Linked universes may help with this For large-scale deployments, you will want to establish development and test environments that are separate from production Finally, with so much metadata built into the universe, extracting metadata from metadata modeling or ETL tools may minimize your maintenance efforts while providing users with consistent terminology across a BI deployment

Linked universes allow a designer to build one master universe called the kernel that then is used to build a subsequent universe called a derived universe Companies generally use linked universes in one of several ways: A central universe designer builds a reference universe that contains common dimension classes that then get linked to other universes In the derived universes, a second designer can add universe-specific tables For example, in Figure 15-1, the tables and corresponding classes and objects for Time, Products, and Customers exist in the kernel universe The designer for the Sales universe links to the kernel to use these common classes and objects The Sales designer hides classes that sales users do not need (Accounts, Employees) and adds new tables to the derived universe (SALES_FACT) This approach can drastically reduce implementation and maintenance efforts, while ensuring a consistent universe interface across multiple universes A central universe designer maintains one kernel universe that contains all the star schemas in the data warehouse; business unit designers then create smaller derived universes that are focused on their individual user group (Figure 15-2) The business unit designer may hide many classes

FIGURE 15-2 Linked universes allow universe creation to be decentralized yet still consistent
15:
Minimizing Universe Maintenance
A derived universe can contain links to more than one kernel universe, so you may also have two small kernel universes that then link to larger derived universes This approach is good for decentralized development, but unless your company follows some strict design principles, the derived universe may contain duplicates and/or you may find it hard to build a cohesive-looking derived universe The problems faced with this kind of model are similar to the ones faced when trying to build a central data warehouse from independent data marts
What Gets Linked
There are a few gotchas with linked universe, and the first one is that not everything is linked Not linking everything is both a help and a hindrance Universe parameters are not linked Therefore, within the derived universe, you still need to set controls for query execution time and result-set size as well as SQL settings that determine if users can create complex queries or create queries that involve multiple fact tables
PART II
NOTE In earlier versions of BusinessObjects, customized lists of values did not get linked or work
properly with linked universes In XI Release 2, they do The name of the list of value will not be the same, but the functionality provided by the customization is carried through For example, if you rename the list of values on Customer ID to CUSTID, the derived universe shows a nonsensical name of ~00T0001 Join definitions are linked to the derived universe, but not the contexts The vendor argues that this is the correct procedure, as the derived universe may contain additional joins and contexts This is true; however, the current approach builds an incorrect universe that contains loops I would like to see the contexts brought into the derived universe A universe designer could then add new joins to existing contexts or create new contexts altogether With the current approach, all contexts must be re-created in the derived universe Aggregate navigation settings are linked If you add a new aggregate table within the derived universe, you can define additional incompatibilities; all the original incompatibilities are still preserved Custom hierarchies are not linked However, as you build new custom hierarchies in the derived universe, when an object name changes in the kernel universe, the new name is included in the derived universe s custom hierarchy The following table summarizes which components get linked or not:
Universe Component Universe parameters Classes and objects List of values customizations Joins Contexts Aggregate navigation Custom hierarchies Linked Not Linked
