Database Format applies only to date fields and will be dimmed for nondate fields The date format can be very confusing, particularly when you consider that there is different behavior in XI versus earlier versions and between Web Intelligence and Desktop Intelligence So proceed with caution! As an American, it took me a while to realize that much of the rest of the world writes the date differently, and I humbly apologize to the international world for being so ethnocentric! I only learned this the hard way after living in Switzerland for a number of years and having an English husband: An American will refer to April 1 as 04/01 A European will write April 1 as 01/04 (You can imagine the confusion this causes when my husband and I attempt to confirm various appointments!) The format displayed in the list of values and in the report comes from either the Control Panel Regional settings (for Desktop Intelligence) or the InfoView General Preferences, Locale (for Web Intelligence) Meanwhile, the query engine uses the date format defined in the databaseprm file to generate the SQL syntax when a date is used in the WHERE clause Thus the date you see in a list of values may be different than the date format in the SQL generated The parameter files are located in the following directory on Windows:
Paint EAN-13 Supplement 5 In Java

SBO file With XI, they are XML files and the settings are in the PRM files You can change the database settings for an individual object in the Database Format box This will affect the SQL generated but not the list of values For example, the ODBC PRM file has the following parameter:

Oracle uses the following default settings in the Oracleprm file:
<Parameter Name="USER_INPUT_DATE_FORMAT">'dd-MM-yyyy HH:mm:ss'</Parameter> <Parameter Name="DATABASE_DATE_FORMAT">DD-MM-YYYY HH24:MI:SS</Parameter>
SQL Server uses the following default settings to generate the SQL where clause:
<Parameter Name="USER_INPUT_DATE_FORMAT">'mm/dd/yyyy HH:m:s'</Parameter>
If any of your date fields in your database do not follow the default format, you may need to modify the object properties to override the settings in the respective parameter file It s important to note that These settings come into play only when a date field is used as a condition You need to worry about such settings only when users get errors, no data is returned, or you suspect a mismatch in the way date fields are physically stored versus in a query condition In Web Intelligence, they do not affect the list of values date format In the BusinessObjects 61 full client, they do affect the list of values date format, but in Desktop Intelligence, they do not appear to
Part II:
A Better Universe
In the Island Resorts Marketing universe, TIMERESERVATION_DATE is stored in MS Access as YYYY-MM-DD When a user places the Reservation Date object in the condition panel, the query engine will automatically take the user s input and convert it to whatever input format is set in the ODBCPRM file (yyyy-mm-dd) Because this format is the same format for how the physical date values are stored, the user gets the correct results However, if the object properties specified a precise time stamp that included hours and minutes or an incompatible date format, users would receive an error or no rows returned To ensure users get the correct results, specify a date format in the Object Properties dialog that corresponds with the date in the physical database In this example, {\t\s yyyymm-dd HH:mm:ss } would be the correct Database Format if the Reservation Date also included a precise time of day As shown in the following screen, note that ODBC requires the brackets and \t\s parameters for time stamps; Oracle and SQL Server do not
Now, if a user enters 1/12/2001 as a condition value, the hours and minutes are automatically appended to the condition as Web Intelligence converts the SQL using the format specified in Object Properties:
