Main Contactor
A contactor works just like a relay Its heavy-duty contacts (typically rated at 150 to 250 amps continuous) allow you to control heavy currents with a low-level voltage A single-pole, normally open main contactor, shown in Figure 9-8, is placed in the highcurrent circuit between the battery and the controller and motor When you energize it typically by turning the ignition key switch on high-current power is made available to the controller and motor
Reversing Contactor
This contactor is used in EVs when electrical rather than mechanical transmission control of forward-reverse direction is desired The change-over contacts of this doublepole contactor, shown in Figure 9-9, are used to reverse the direction of current flow in the field winding of a series DC motor When this contactor is used, a forward-reversecenter off switch is added to the low-voltage wiring system after the ignition key switch
