Interworking between an H323 architecture and SS7 could work in a similar manner to interworking between softswitch and SS7 The approach would be to use SGs that terminate SS7 signaling The SS7 application information would be carried using Sigtran from the SS7 gateways to one or more H323 gateways Equally, however, the gateway itself could simply terminate SS7 links directly In fact, such an approach has merit In the H323 architecture, the gateway itself contains a great deal of the application logic required for call setup, and the gateway is also the entity that performs the media conversion The fact that the gateway holds the application logic means that it must send and receive call control signaling information The fact that the gateway performs the media conversion means that it should be placed at the edge of the IP network Since the gateway is at the edge of the network, it is likely easier and more efficient for the gateway itself to terminate SS7 links from the PSTN directly The architecture would be as shown in Figure 7-36 In fact, interworking SS7 with H323 is in some ways an easier proposition than interworking SS7 and softswitch (at least for ISUP) The reason is because a close relationship exists between ISUP and Q931 After all,

ISUP is the ISDN User Part, the interswitch network protocol corresponding to the ISDN access protocol Q931 Consequently, mapping is easy between Q931 messages and ISUP messages For example, the setup message in Q931 maps to IAM in ISUP, and ACM in ISUP maps to the Connect message in Q931 Therefore, if an H323 network were to receive a call from the PSTN using ISUP, the signaling would be similar to that shown in Figure 7-37
