Setup
Setup Acknowledge
Can be forwarded from a gateway in the case of PSTN interworking Q931 Release message is not used Can be used in overlap signaling or to enable proprietary features
Release Complete
Used to bring a call to an end
Information
An optional message that is used to send additional call-establishment information Optional message that may be used to provide information for presentation to the user Sent in response to status inquiry or in response to an unknown message A message used to query the remote end as to the current call status from its perspective Used to redirect a call or to invoke a supplementary service
Notify
Can be used by calling or called endpoint
Status
An optional message that can be sent in either direction
Status Inquiry
Can be sent in conjunction with RAS status procedures
Facility (Q932)
Can be sent by either end at any time during a call and is useful for conveying information when no other message can be sent

example, H2250 does not define any exotic new information elements to be included in particular messages On the other hand, H2250 does not take each Q931 message as is either Instead, H2250 specifies a number of rules regarding the usage of information elements defined in Q931 For example, H2250 does not permit the use of the Transit Network Selection information element, nor does it currently support the use of High-Layer Compatibility and Low-Layer Compatibility information elements In fact, the changes specified by H2250 generally involve specifying that certain Q931 mandatory information elements are either forbidden or optional when used in an H323 network The big question, however, is how H2250 s use of Q931 messages enables the transfer of H323-specific information For example, a clear need exists to transport information regarding gatekeepers and H245 addresses to be used for logical channels These types of items are foreign to the usual ISDN environment of Q931 signaling, which means that information must be added to the Q931 messages This task is performed through a rather clever use of the User-to-User information element This information element in Q931 ISDN messages is used to pass information transparently from one user to another using the D channel The network does not interpret the information In H2250, the User-to-User information element is used to convey all the extra information needed in an H323 environment Such information includes parameters such as a mandatory protocol identifier, endpoint aliases, H245 addresses, and so on The ASN1 syntax specified in H2250 provides the exact syntax to be used in the User-to-User information element of the various messages The following sections of this chapter provide a brief overview of some of the most important call-signaling messages For complete details, the user should refer to the Q931 and H2250 recommendations
Setup
The Setup message is the first call-signaling message sent from one endpoint to another to establish a call If an endpoint uses the services of a gatekeeper, then this message will be sent after the endpoint has received admission from the gatekeeper providing permission for the endpoint to establish the call The message must contain the Q931 Protocol Discriminator, a Call ReferenceSetup, a Bearer Capability, and the User-to-User information element
