The advantage to installing an application using Add/Remove Programs from the Control Panel is that it creates the shadow key properly in all cases The Add/Remove Programs application monitors changes to the HKEY_CURRENT_USER key and saves them in the shadow key This key is then propagated to each user, as shown in Figure 13-1, so that they may have unique settings for that application

For certain types of applications and when installing updates, hotfixes, and patches, it is sometimes necessary to use the change user/install command from a command prompt Under normal circumstances this procedure works well, but in some cases the shadow key information is missing For example, there is a known problem installing Internet Explorer in this manner, but it works perfectly well using the Add/Remove Programs application This method involves opening a command prompt, typing change user /install, installing the application, and then typing change user /execute NOTE: If you use this method, make sure you do not allow the system to reboot without first issuing the change user /execute command If you do not issue the command, the system may not properly record the changes to the Registry When you re installing an application in Windows 2003 Server editions with Terminal Services enabled (either by inserting the CD for the application or launching the executable), Windows usually detects that it is not in install mode and will prompt you to run the program through Add/Remove Programs Some applications are known

to be terminal server aware, such as Microsoft Office, and will install properly into the all users keys without running in install mode It is a good practice to always use the Add/Remove Programs application in Control Panel first to install the application; then, if that fails, use the command prompt with change user /install command What about updates, hotfixes, and service packs A good rule of thumb is that if the update is a full download and it is launched using an exe or msi file, use Add/Remove Programs If the update is done through a web browser, such as a patch for Internet Explorer or an Adobe Reader update, use the command line to change into install mode and then browse for the update and run it Keep in mind when you re installing applications and updates on a Terminal Server that all users should be logged off the server and that the server should be rebooted prior to the installation or update Again, all users must be logged off prior to the installation or update Failure to do so may result in some serious undesirables on the servers Keep in mind that when a Terminal Server is placed into install mode, all changes made on the server are written to the All Users Registry hive Therefore, any user s personal settings and changes could be made available to all users logging into the machine

The Application Installation Checklist
The basic procedure for installing applications on a Windows Server 2003 running Citrix XenApp is as follows: 1 Verify that the Terminal Server is a domain member and that DNS and WINS are properly configured 2 Make sure you are logged onto the test server console as a member of the local Administrators group (logging on as a domain administrator is preferred) 3 Verify all users are logged off the server and all sessions are cleared out of the Access Management Console Notify users to log off and reset all disconnected sessions 4 Disable logons to the server using the Access Management Console (select Server | Properties | Presentation Server settings; then uncheck the Enable Logons to This Server check box) to prevent users from logging on during the application installation 5 Run the Add/Remove Programs application from the Control Panel and browse to the application s setup program to begin installation This will put the server into install mode, similar to running change user /install from a command prompt 6 Click Finish after the application has completed installation and before the server reboots This will put the server back into execute mode, similar to running change user /execute from a command prompt NOTE: Some applications will cause a server to reboot during an install In this case, after the server reboots, open a command prompt and run change user /query to verify the current state of the server before proceeding to the next application
