Auto-created network printers Printers that are connected to print servers and shared on a Windows network In Windows network environments, users can set up a network printer on their computer if they have permission to connect to the print server In a XenApp environment, administrators can import network printers and assign them to users based on group membership and Citrix policies When a network printer is set up for use on an individual Windows computer, the printer is a client printer on the client device This configuration uses printer drivers installed on print servers, as well as print devices configured and accessible through these print servers These printers are imported into XenApp and can be assigned to users through policies Server local printers Printers physically attached to and network printers configured on each server running XenApp These are usually created by an administrator on the Citrix XenApp using the Add Printer Wizard from within the Printers applet in the Control Panel If the printer is added to the XenApp Server with the port pointed to a share such as \\printserver\sharename, the print job is sent to the print server before heading to the printer If the printer is added to the server and the port specifies the actual printer itself (such as an LPR queue to the printer s IP address), the XenApp Server is essentially the print server, and the job is sent directly to the printer Local printers are not typically utilized in an enterprise XenApp environment because of the need for the administrator to set up and maintain every printer in the environment on each XenApp Server Additionally, if the XenApp Server is acting as the print server for print jobs, it is using precious resources to serve up printing and not applications However, local printers can be utilized successfully in smaller XenApp farms (three or fewer servers) TIP: Ideally, XenApp Servers should be dedicated to serving up published applications If the servers have other roles, such as print server, Zone Data Collector, or housing the Data Store, they cannot hold as many users running applications, thus increasing the number of Terminal Servers needed in the farm We recommend building up a separate server (either physical or virtual) for these other roles We call such a server a Tools server This server will not serve up published applications but is a member of the server farm
