Set your zoom lens to telephoto, not to get close to the mountains, but to bring together all the peaks, to unite them so that the photograph emphasizes their mass, as the telephoto shot on the left does in Figure 3-13 Telephoto settings take away the visual distances between objects, making everything appear the same size They minimize the distance between objects that are strung out from the lens The lens compacts trees, mountains, sand dunes, ocean waves, mesas all that goes into a single photo into one solid mass

Use a telephoto setting, for example, to shoot a field of flowers By compressing the perspective, the long lens makes it seem as if flowers pack the field to overflowing If you want the sun in your sunset shots to appear monstrously large, zoom to telephoto and include something in the frame whose size is immediately recognizable, like a house or the branches of a tree

A wide-angle lens setting has exactly the opposite effect In the shot on the right in Figure 3-13, a wide-angle setting moves objects apart visually A shot of a field of flowers taken with the lens zoomed out would emphasize the gaps of bare dirt that spread among the flowers If you re shooting a landscape, but the face of a person framing the scenic view is really what you want someone to pay attention to, zoom your lens to the wide-angle setting and the person s face appears bigger than a mountain If you re going for the big-sky look, the wide angle emphasizes the expansiveness of the landscape See how the use of telephoto and wide-angle settings create different effects in the photos in Figure 3-13

There are photographers you know who you are who go on family vacations, pull out the camera to shoot a picture of the Grand Canyon but first warn spouse and children to be sure to not walk in front of the camera Big mistake All but the most talented photographers can find photos to match theirs in the canyon s gift shop Even if the setting is the most beautiful heaven on earth, make sure the little devils in your family are in the picture You will be creating something unique, something you can t buy in a gift shop Twenty years from now, I guarantee you, others will be looking at the people in the photo, not your wonderfully composed and exposed photos of the Grand Canyon The same thing is still true even if the people in the photo are strangers There is no landscape, cityscape, seascape, or picture shot in the deepest caverns or the bottom of the ocean that doesn t get more interesting when there are human beings in it

For an outdoor shot, lighting may be just fine as far as your light meter s concerned It sees no reason to activate the flash But you should, or else an important part of your subject most typically a face may be lost in the shadows Then you should activate your flash manually for a fill flash The flash lights up the shadows caused on a face by the nose and the forehead overhanging the eyes The flash has no effect on the surroundings that are already exposed correctly See the difference in the two photos in Figure 3-14
Figure 3-14 Left, shadows obscure the face Right, fill flash removes the shadows
3: Shoot
Photojournalists often don t have the luxury of setting up lighting, and often they don t even have the luxury of a second shot They routinely use a flash for all situations, outdoors and indoors Unless the shadows cast on a subject are important to highlighting design or creating mood, fill flash usually improves straightforward outdoor shots
AS A MATTER OF FACT Many digital camera lenses have a macro feature When activated, usually by pressing a button, the macro feature allows the lens to focus on extremely close objects objects that may be as close to the lens as an inch or two Photos of flowers make good still lifes, but a photo of a single flower is transformed into something resembling a Georgia O Keefe painting when the camera s lens moves to within an inch or two of the heart of the flow Check out Figure 3-15
