This doesn t mean you should rush out and stock up on Epson paper for your HP printer Remember, the results are only for papers used on printers for which the paper has been especially created What this does mean is that a quick, fading death for computer printed photos will disappear completely within a few more years Though Epson has a jump start, other printer makers will eventually catch up Do Your Part
Using the right paper and inks with the right printer is what s needed to create archival collections and displays of photos There are some simple rules to follow to make sure you produce and preserve prints that resist the ravages of light, air, and display materials Dry When you print a photo, allow it to dry without anything on it for 24 hours It may seem to be dry much sooner or even feel dry to the touch, but the absorption process goes on for hours afterward Glossy and premium papers take longer to dry than photos on ordinary printer paper Don t allow prints to pile up in the printer s output bin When a print is dry, spray it with a varnish such as Lyson Print Guard or any other varnish with a UV blocker Spray horizontally across the surface lightly three times and vertically three times Let the spray dry thoroughly before stacking or handling the prints If you re not going to display the photo, put it in an archival-quality plastic sleeve That means it contains a filter to block ultraviolet light and is made of a material that won t react with the paper or inks Store your sleeved prints so that they don t weigh on each other in a dark, dry place In you want to put the photos in a scrapbook, use only archival-scrapbook materials that are chemically inert and won t react with the chemicals in the photos Scrapbook paper should be marked acid-free and lignin-free To label photos in your scrapbook, use permanent markers that are acid-free and water-free If you have a hard time finding archival materials at photo shops, check art supply stores and the latest phenomenon, scrapbook stores Avoid using any adhesives directly on the photo front or back No adhesive tape It will yellow and the glue will bond with your pictures Acid-free adhesives work well, as do archival-quality photo corners If you want to put your photos in a scrapbook, get a scrapbook that has archival-quality pages, and a UV treated plastic sheet over each page It blocks not only the most harmful light, but the air as well Archive
For framed photos, of course, use archival-quality materials, including UV-filtered glass The best mounting uses cardboard matte so that the glass is not actually in contact with the print Hang the framed photo on a wall where it gets as little direct sunlight as possible
