Nina s converter is tiny, like the parser before. It extends ROME s ConverterForRSS091 b, it declares a default constructor C, and it declares a type constructor D. Nina takes a shortcut in her implementation. Since she is interested only in parsing <pubDates> from RSS 0.91 and not generating them, she just implements one-way conversion. That is, she overrides only the createSyndEntry() method E, which takes an RSS Item object and returns a SyndEntry. Running the example code Nina s parser and converter classes are included in the online examples that accompany this book. You can find the complete source code for the two classes, RSS091UParser.java and ConverterForRSS091U.java, in the directory java/ch07/ src. In that same directory, you ll also find a rome.properties file that configures ROME to use Nina s classes:

See the readme file in java/ch07 for instructions on how to build and run the chapter 7 examples. The build process will build Nina s parser, converter, and rome.properties file into the ch07.jar file. Because of this, all of the parsing examples in this chapter support the <pubDate> element in RSS 0.91U newsfeeds.

ROME is a free and open source Java class library that supports parsing and generating all of the common RSS and Atom newsfeed formats. ROME s primary design goal is to make parsing and generating newsfeeds easy, but it also aims to be complete and highly flexible.
The primary limitations of ROME are due to its dependence on a DOMbased XML parser. DOM is not the most memory efficient way to parse XML, and DOM-based parsers are not liberal (that is, they can t handle XML that is not well formed). With ROME, you can work with an abstract object model known as the SyndFeed model, which masks the differences between newsfeed formats, or you can work with either an Atom- or RSS-friendly WireFeed model. The core of ROME is lightweight and depends only on the JDOM parser, but the ROME project also provides a series of subprojects to support most common newsfeed extension modules, efficient newsfeed fetching, and persistence, using other open source Java class libraries (e.g., Hibernate and HTTPClient). The ROME Fetcher supports a variety of techniques for efficient fetching and caching of newsfeeds, including HTTP conditional GET, ETags, and compression.
ROME s plug-architecture makes it possible to add newsfeed extension modules to ROME and to override ROME s default parsing and generat-
ing behavior.
How to serve newsfeeds
Learn techniques for efficiently generating and serving Atom and RSS newsfeeds in your web applications.
How to serve newsfeeds
In the previous chapter, you learned how to read, parse, and make use of newsfeed data. In this chapter, we will cover the other half of the newsfeed story: how to add value to your web applications, web sites, and data sources by generating and serving your own newsfeeds. You ll learn how to produce valid newsfeeds and how to efficiently serve them from your web applications, how to check your newsfeeds for validity, and how to limit the increased load that serving newsfeeds will place on your computer and network resources. As with the previous chapter, you will get the most out of this chapter if you are knowledgeable in web development, XML, and either Java or C#. The examples in this chapter alternate between Java and C#, but many of the concepts discussed here apply no matter what programming language or environment you are using. Let s get started by checking in with our friends Nina, Rangu, and Otto.
