The server has accepted the image and sent back an Atom entry to represent it, known as a media link entry. The entry includes a <link> with rel= edit , which contains a URL you can use to update and delete the media link. The entry also contains a link with rel= edit-media , which you can use to update the image itself. If you want to update the image, simply use AuthPut to PUT a new image to the edit-media URL. The entry also includes a <content> element with an src attribute containing the URL where you can find the publicly accessible version of the image. Listing media files with AuthGet Now that we ve uploaded a file to the adminblog on the Blogapps server, let s use AuthGet to retrieve the list of media files on the server. We ve seen what an entry collection looks like, so in fairness, let s do the same for a media collection. Enter the command below to list the members of adminblog s media collection:

That s the same <entry> we saw when we posted the image, but this time it s part of a collection, so it s wrapped in an Atom <feed> element. There s no next <link> because there s only one item in the collection. That brings us to the end of our command-line exploration of the Atom protocol. We now understand how Atom works at the lowest level. Let s use that knowledge to build a blog client library for Atom.
10.3 Building a blog client with Atom protocol
In chapter 9, we defined the interfaces needed for a simple blog client library and implemented them using the XML -RPC based MetaWeblog API. Our goals were to make it easier to write blog applications and to mask the differences between MetaWeblog API and Atom protocol so that our applications will be able to work with both. But to fully achieve those goals, we need an Atom protocol version of our blog client library, so that s what we ll develop next. In this section, we ll expand the chapter 9 blog client interfaces to support Atom protocol and explain how to implement them in Java. Since Atom is likely to change before it is finalized, we won t include the source code here, but we will diagram and explain the classes involved. The full source code is available in the online examples that accompany the book, and we ll update it when Atom is finalized.
10.3.1 Atom does more Atom is not complete, but it already does more than the MetaWeblog API. By providing a consistent mechanism for accessing and manipulating large collections, Atom makes it much easier to manage blog entries, uploaded files, and possibly other resources, depending on what the final Atom protocol supports. With Atom, it s possible to iterate or page through the items in a collection without fetching the entire collection. As we ve seen, it s also possible to list, update, and delete uploaded file resources just as you can list, update, and delete blog entries. And since Atom protocol is based on the well-defined Atom format, it benefits from a richer entry model with common constructs for content, categories, and people. Let s compare the MetaWeblog API and Atom protocol features that are relevant to our blog client library. Table 10.1 shows them side by side.
