Planning for the PPTP Installation
The following is a list of key points that need to be recognized and understood before you implement PPTP PPTP uses Microsoft's implementation of RAS and the Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) to establish connections with remote computers by using dial-up lines The mechanics of PPP are discussed in upcoming sections To use PPTP, you must install and configure RAS with Dial-Up Networking on the PPTP server as well as the clients For a dial-up solution, you must establish a PPP account with your ISP PPTP uses VPNs that are installed and configured in RAS as if they were physical devices PPTP is only installed on the client and on the server not on any devices in between Consider placing the PPTP server on the external side of a firewall The firewall can then check the traffic before allowing it onto the internal network PPTP clients must be authenticated
The IP address of the PPTP server must be a registered IP address when the tunnel goes through a public network All other addresses encapsulated within the data packets are irrelevant to the PPTP connection In order for PPTP to be installed and supported, you'll need to verify that your network supports the appropriate hardware; your network must also meet the minimum server and client requirements These stipulations are explained in the following sections
