and dark pixels in your file To use this road map, you just need to know which end is up The peak on the far left depicts the darkest pixels in your image (see Figure 3-6) To adjust these darker tones, drag the black triangle (black, for dark) until it sits directly under that peak on the far left The peak on the far right of the histogram represents the lightest tones in the image To adjust, grab the white triangle (white, for light) and drag until it lines up with the end of that last peak on the right There You just reset the lightest and darkest tones in your image And although you already see improvements, there s one more thing we should do Adjust the Middle For most images, the majority of pixels fall somewhere in

the middle tonal range, between the two ends of the histogram Since this is the case, adjustments to the midrange often result in the most dramatic improvements To make an adjustment, grab the gray triangle below the histogram and drag it to the left a bit and watch all those middle-range pixels lighten up Just move it a little bit if you go too far, you ll obliterate all midtones from the image So, small nudges here are best, when you see what you like in the Image Window, click OK to commit to the changes

AS A MATTER OF FACT Instead of RGB, select a specific color channel (red, green, or blue) from the Channel pop-up menu at the top of the Levels dialog box to adjust the levels of specific colors
We usually prefer adjusting images manually, like we just did with the Levels command But there are a few auto options we should mention For instance, the Auto Levels or Auto Contrast commands (both are choices under the Enhance menu) are capable of improving the tonal range in an image when you re pressed for time Or you can try Image | Adjustments | Equalize for a similar effect However, you might find (if your image is in fair shape already) that these auto commands have no visible effect on your image It s not the last word, it just means you ll have to make the adjustments manually
Correct Color
After you establish a sturdy base a good balance of light and dark values it s time to address color concerns Maybe you scanned a color photo that has yellowed with age Or maybe the lighting was such that it washed out the vibrancy of the colors Whatever the case, any adjustment to the color of an image is bound to have a big impact After all, color is what helps us all understand and describe the physical world around us
Remove a Color-Cast
We ve already mentioned a couple of scenarios involving color-cast: The Auto Levels command can create one in an image, or the colors in a photo can yellow with age Sometimes a color-cast might be desirable: yellow to make a new image appear old, or blue to make it look cold But usually, you ll want to rid your images of noticeable color-casts Elements offers a couple of options to do just that
