Even though we closed the Welcome Screen, there s still a lot of stuff left on your screen Just what are all those menus, icons, and toolbars Well, in various ways, this stuff helps you get things done Collectively, they are called the work area (see Figure 1-2), and understanding it is essential to taking full advantage of Elements many exciting features It might seem like a lot to master, but there s no need to fear This chapter will help you make sense of the Work Area And we ll give you some clues and tips to exploring the work area on your own

Open an Image
You know you can open an image with the help of the Welcome Screen, but the more common route is through the File menu Move your cursor over the word File at the top of your screen and click to see a menu of commands To open an existing image from your hard drive or a CD-ROM, move your cursor down the menu and click Open Do that now A dialog box appears to help you navigate through the contents of your hard drive and find the file you want to open (for more on this, see 2) In essence, you re showing Elements where to go to get the image So we re all on the same page, we ll use a sample image that Elements placed on your hard drive when you installed the program 1 Through the Open dialog box, find your hard drive and open it 2 Now find and open the Elements folder 3 Find and open the Tutorial folder 4 Select the file named Startpsd and click Open
The Image Window
You should now see an image of a toy wooden figure on a beach The area that Elements uses to display the image (any image) is called the Image Window (see Figure 1-3) An Image Window exists for two reasons: to display an image
