But first, we should clean the practice strokes off our canvas Of course, at this point you could just click the Step Backward button to return to the blank canvas, but we ll take this opportunity to show you the Eraser tool Select it from the Toolbox now make sure you select the plain old Eraser, and not the Magic Eraser or the Background Eraser (they all share the same spot in the Toolbox)

The Eraser tool is a little tricky If you re working on the Background layer of a file as we are, erased pixels actually change to the background color Since we want the pixels to change to white (the color of our canvas), we need to make sure the background color is set to white The easiest way to do this is to click the icon at the bottom of the Toolbox that resets the foreground and background colors to their defaults (see Figure 6-2) Then click and drag the Eraser on the canvas until all your practice brush strokes are gone You can change the size, shape, and opacity of the Eraser, just as you would a Brush, through the settings in the Options bar

Even cheesy public television painters know that the most effective way to start a painting is to lay down large areas of color that suggest shapes and areas of interest They know it s much easier to put paint on top of paint than to try to paint around things For instance, for our landscape, we want to make the top portion of the painting blue (for sky) and the bottom portion green (for grass) We can go back and fill in the details and shading later To start, we ll use two methods to fill large areas with color: the Gradient and Paint Bucket tools from the Toolbox

Gradients
One of the easiest and most interesting ways to fill large areas with color is the Gradient tool; it creates a gradual blend of different colors To try it, select the Gradient tool (to the right of the Paint Bucket) from the Toolbox and click the arrow next to the gradient sample in the Options bar (see Figure 6-7) Click the arrow in the upper right of the pop-up palette that appears, then choose Pastels from that menu Notice how the gradient choices in the pop-up palette change when you choose the Pastels gradient library; click one of these to select a specific gradient (we chose the Yellow, Green, Blue gradient) When you paint with any gradient, you should take note of the sequence of colors (yellow, then green, then blue) as they appear in the thumbnail; the gradient tool will always paint the colors in this order So you can decide where these colors appear on your image by the way you drag the gradient tool across the canvas For instance, if you start at the top of the image and drag down, your fill will start with yellow at the top and end with blue at the bottom Since we want the top part of the sky to be blue, we ll drag in the opposite direction, from the bottom up Position the cursor about one-half inch up from the bottom of the canvas, press SHIFT (this will prevent the gradient from skewing), click and drag to the top of the canvas, then release Instant sky
