Although we ve covered a lot of ground with filters, there s plenty for you to discover on your own But there are two especially useful filters we want to highlight before moving on, and they re both found in the Render filters category: Lens Flare and Lighting Effects While these filters create different results, their common goal is to enable you to add realistic lighting to images
Lens Flare
The easier of these two filters is Lens Flare It creates the effect of a bright light, as if from a camera flash or the midday sun reflecting off a shiny object like the lens of a camera What s more, you can apply it to a specific area of your image and control both the shape of the reflection and its intensity To try it:
8: Embellish
1 Open an image and pull the Filters palette down from the Palette Well 2 Select Render from the category pop-up menu in the palette, make sure the Filter Options in the upper-left side of the palette is turned on, then choose Lens Flare and click Apply 3 In the Filter Options settings box, enter a Brightness value (or pull the slider to the left or right) and then select a Lens Type We chose 105mm Prime for our Lens Type and a Brightness value of 135 percent to create the illusion of a white-hot sun in the sky 4 Click OK when you re pleased with the effect
Figure 8-7 We suggest an SPF of 45
While the filters we ve shown you are great for altering photographic images, they can also be used on files you create with Elements paint and draw tools (see 6 for a full discussion of painting) For instance, we like to use the Lens Flare filter to make an object we ve drawn (like a sphere) look shiny and reflective and more three-dimensional
Lighting Effects
The other filter we mentioned, the Lighting Effects filter, does far more than we can cover in our demonstration of it here To be sure, you could play with this filter for days and never repeat yourself But since our interest, for now, is in setting a mood, we ll stick to the basics and guide you through creating an effect like the one seen in Figure 8-9 To start, open an image and select Lighting Effects from the Render
