You can also add scanned images to your movies just as easily as you can add images from a digital camera This would be an excellent way to include photos from your old family album, or you could use some historical images to set the scene for a before and after view if you re creating a travel video Scanned copies of old documents or greeting cards are also items that you may want to consider including in your movie I can imagine creating a family album that includes letters and postcards someone sent home from a trip abroad You could also include things like a scanned copy of an antique greeting card to set the mood for a holiday video In this chapter, I ve tried to give you the information about how you can get your content into your PC as well as ideas for some things you might want to add to your movies As you ve seen, the distinction between digital and analog content only exists outside of your computer once the content is inside your system, it is all handled as digital data Next, we re going to look at some important movie-making concepts that you need to understand in order to get the most from your digital video editor Once you have learned these fundamentals, you ll find that you have a lot more fun creating your great-looking movies!

t s time to move on to some important movie making concepts These are really the fundamentals that you will want to understand in order to get the most from your video editing software By taking the time to learn these basics, you will be able to produce movies that are better looking and a lot more enjoyable to watch In this chapter we re going to look at storyboards and timelines two different but related means of visualizing the flow of the scenes that make up your movie As you will see, storyboards and timelines also provide you with the ultimate control over just how all of those scenes fit together and, consequently, over the overall flavor of your movie In fact, as you increase the sophistication of your productions in later chapters, you ll find that these two objects are really the backbone of the entire movie making process Before we go any further, I d like to take this opportunity to point out that in this section of the book we ll be using one digital video editor Pinnacle Studio 8 as the basis for our examples The reason is simply that Pinnacle Studio 8 is one of the most complete of the mainstream video editors one that can demonstrate all of the concepts for you its consistent use will reduce any possible confusion Rather than trying to understand a whole bunch of different programs, you can simply spend the time learning about the important movie making concepts, which you can then apply in your favorite video editor Remember, though, that even if you prefer to use a different video editor, I m not going to ignore your needs In fact, in Part III I m going to devote each chapter to creating a complete movie in a different popular video editing program Chances are, you ll find a whole chapter on your favorite Until then, however, let s get some basics under your belt so you can be a master movie producer!
