The set boot Command
This command configures the various boot options on a CatOS switch The command consists of four subcommands: auto-config, config-register, sync-now, and system Each of these is a bit different, so they are discussed individually in the following syntax sections Syntax for the set boot auto-config Subcommand The set boot auto-config subcommand sets the startup configuration options on the switch On a switch with a Supervisor Engine IIG or IIIG, this command has the following formats: set boot auto-config [configuration file list] and set boot auto-config [recurring | nonrecurring] The set boot auto-config [configuration file list] format specifies the configuration file used after a switch reset By default, the current configuration (represented as simply config) is reused The options on the IIG and IIG switches are either cfg1 or cfg2, or both The cfg1 and cfg2 files are configuration files stored in flash on the switch (Use the copy command to create these files from a current configuration) These files are used to configure the switch only at boot or after using the copy cfg1 config or copy cfg2 config commands By using the set boot auto-config command, you can force the switch to use one of these configuration files at reset To specify that the switch uses both files after a reset, use the syntax set boot auto-config [first choice];[second choice] For example, if you wanted the switch to use cfg2 if available, but use cfg1 if cfg2 is corrupted or has been deleted, you would type set boot auto-config cfg2;cfg1 For a switch with a supervisor engine other than the IIG or IIIG, the syntax for this command is set boot auto-config [device]:[filename] The device is bootflash, slot0, or slot1, and the filename is the name of the configuration file (for example, Cat5kcfg) You can also choose to use multiple files by appending them to the command So, if you wanted the switch to boot from a file called Cat5Kcfg in slot 0 if possible, but to boot from a backup configuration file called oldconfigcfg in bootflash if the Cat5Kcfg file is unavailable, you would type set boot auto-config slot0:Cat5Kcfg;bootflash:oldconfigcfg The set boot auto-config [recurring | nonrecurring] subcommand is used on switches with Supervisor Engines IIG or IIIG to determine whether the configuration register is cleared after each reset If you choose nonrecurring, the configuration register is cleared, and the next
reboot will be from the config (not from the cfg1 or cfg2 file you specified with the set boot auto-config [configuration file] command) This setting is the default If you choose recurring, the configuration register will not be cleared, and your settings will remain Syntax for the set boot config-register Subcommand The set boot config-register subcommand sets the configuration register from within the CatOS (rather than from Rommon) It has two primary syntax options: set boot configregister [hex value] and set boot config-register [boot option] [value] The set boot config-register [hex value] syntax allows you to set the configuration register by simply typing in the hex value you wish to change it to This is fast but rather user unfriendly The default value for this field is 0x10F, which sets the following parameters:
Sets the boot method to system (allowing configuration commands to determine the boot image) Sets the console port to 9600 baud Disables the ignore-config variable (allowing configuration in NVRAM to be used at reset; enabling this value clears the NVRAM at reload, giving the switch a blank configuration) Sets auto-config to nonrecurring
The set boot config-register [option] [value] syntax is typically easier to use, although somewhat more time-consuming With this format, you simply specify the name of the option to change (boot, baud, ignore-config, or auto-config) and the value you want to change it to For the boot option, the possible values are rommon (to cause the switch to boot directly into Rommon), bootflash (to cause the system to boot directly to the first image it can find), or system (to allow configuration files to determine the boot image) For the baud option, the possible values are 1200, 2400, 4800, or 9600 For the ignore-config option, the values are simply enable or disable Finally, for the auto-config option, the values are simply recurring or nonrecurring Syntax for the set boot sync-now Subcommand This subcommand initiates synchronization of the configuration files between the primary and standby supervisor engines in a CatOS switch This allows you to keep the same configuration for both engines without manually copying the files The syntax for this subcommand is simply set boot sync-now Syntax for the set boot system Subcommand This command sets the image the switch boots from The syntax for the command is set boot system [device]:[filename] [prepend] [module number] The device and filename follow the same conventions discussed in earlier commands (such as the copy command) The prepend flag is optional, and it tells the switch to place this entry at the top of the list of boot images (Otherwise, boot images are processed in the order entered, and the first one found is used) The module number states for which module you are specifying the boot image This is also optional, and if left out, is assumed to be 1
