In this example, you just add a few commands to the CRB config The first difference is obviously the bridge irb command, which tells the switch to use IRB instead of CRB Then you issue a new command, mls rp ip When issued in global config mode, this command globally enables multilayer switching on the switch (You still need to enable it on each BVI, however) Note As you will see later in this section, the mls rp ip command also enables MLSP on a router Therefore, it must be configured both globally and for each interface that will be participating in MLS on all MLS-RPs in the network Next, you add interface e1 to bridge group 3, just like before; but instead of giving the interface an IP address, you configure the BVI for the bridge group to which it belongs with the IP address To perform this task, you issue the command interface bvi [bridge group number] Then you will go into interface config mode for the BVI for the given bridge group (in this case, 3) There, you issue the IP address command, just like normal However, you also add an additional command, mls rp ip, to allow this BVI to be used as a routing interface You duplicate these steps for BVIs 2 and 1, and then you issue the bridge [group number] route ip command to enable routing on all bridge groups Now you have your functional, fully routed network all contained in one very power-ful layer 3 switch Note that from a client standpoint, the IP address configured for the BVI for a given bridge group is used as the default gateway In addition to being less of a headache for the administrator, another advantage of using IRB is flexibility In this scenario, you have four ports unused on the switch With IRB, you can use these ports as necessary to expand your bridge groups For example, if you wanted to add a new server to bridge group 2, as shown in Figure 20-14, you would simply add an available port (such as e4) to the bridge group, and you would be done
