Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) is a standard that has literally changed the way networks are analyzed The initial purpose of SNMP was to provide a quick fix to the problem of networks getting so large that it was difficult to monitor every device for errors and failures SNMP was born out of a need for a standardized system to detect and, in some cases, repair these error conditions The initial SNMP specification (SNMP version 1), although considerably better than any other industry-standard management suite at the time, was still lacking in many areas SNMP version 2 improved on version 1 by adding a number of features (such as additional information-gathering commands), but it was still somewhat lacking SNMP version 3 improves on possibly the most significant problem with SNMP version 1 and version 2: security With SNMP versions 1 and 2, the only security implemented is the use of community names and, optionally, the requirement that the Management Station have a specific IP address With community names, each device participating in the SNMP communication must use the same community name, which is almost like a password The problem with this setup is that it is not very secure because many networks just use the default community names (typically, public or private) With SNMP version 3, additional authentication features, including optional encryption, are used to prevent security problems How SNMP works, like DNS, is the subject of entire books Unfortunately, we don't have the ability to go into quite that much detail here, but we will go through SNMP on a basic level SNMP consists of three major components:

Basically, the process works like this The Agents are set to record certain events (such as average throughput) into the MIB The Management Station then contacts the Agents and collects the data The Management Station then builds a global MIB with all of the data collected from all of the Agents and, depending on the Management Station, may perform different functions with that data (like tracking trends and predicting failures) With version 3, the lines between Management Stations and Agents become a bit blurred because version 3 is based on a modular architecture, which allows the functions of both to be implemented in the same device, but the basic process is the same In addition to the ability to manually collect information from the Agents, the Agent can also dynamically inform the Management Station of problems with traps: special messages sent from the Agents to the Management Station based on "problem" conditions They can be sent when certain events happen, such as disk space getting low or an attempted security breach Finally, the Management Station can sometimes change the configuration of the device with a type of message known as a set message This message allows the Management Station to actively modify the Agent and, in some cases, the remote device itself SNMP, in all its versions, is by far the most common management protocol in use today While SNMP version 3 is the most recent and complete version of the specification, SNMP version 2 and even SNMP version 1 are still used in many networks And, of course, all versions of SNMP are supported on Cisco routers (SNMP version 2 requires IOS 112(6)F or later, whereas SNMP version 3 requires IOS 120(3)T or later) SNMP is defined by literally hundreds of RFCs, all of which can be found at http://wwwrfceditororg/cgi-bin/rfcsearchpl
