The 7200 series is designed to be a high-end enterprise router that also performs well in service-provider (ie, ISP) networks It includes a dizzying array of features, versatility, and a high-performance routing/switching engine to support a wide variety of functions The features available in the 7200 series include all of the features from both the 3600 and 7100 series (including extensive multiservice voice, video, and data support, as well as hardware VPN support), and add to this already impressive list by incorporating extensive support for WAN switching (including ATM, X25, and Frame Relay switching), TDM support (to switch DS0 channels between physical DS1 and higher links), and CEF or PXF high-speed layer 3 switching The 7200 series comes in four distinct models: the 7204, 7204VXR, 7206, and 7206VXR The primary difference in these models is in the number of slots in the chassis (the 7204 models include four slots, whereas the 7206 models include six slots), and the degree of multiservice support (only the VXR models include full multiservice support)

The 7200 series is a truly modular router line; the I/O controller, processing engine, interface cards, and chassis are all separate components, allowing you to build a custom 7200 series router to suit your needs The I/O controller in the 7200 series is responsible for directing and monitoring the flow of data across the midplane; it provides the console and auxiliary ports as well as the PC Card slots and, in some models, Fast or Gigabit Ethernet ports for uplinking to other switches and routers The I/O controllers available for the 7200 series include a standard controller with no Ethernet ports, a controller with one Fast Ethernet port, a controller with dual 10/100 Fast Ethernet ports, and a controller with a single Gigabit Ethernet port and a single Ethernet port The processing engine on the 7200 series is responsible for the bulk of the switching and routing duties, as well as any optional functions such as encryption, compression, and QoS The 7200 series supports three network processing engines (NPE): the NPE-225, NPE-300, and NPE-400 The primary difference in these engines is the performance offered and the degree of multiservice support The NPE-225 is the low end of the NPE family, and it is designed primarily for regional office or small service-provider duties The NPE-225 supports a maximum forwarding rate of 225,000 PPS, and supports all 7200 chassis It does not include multiservice support, but does include channel aggregation capabilities The NPE-300 is the midrange in the NPE family, and it is intended to be used in enterprise or midlevel service-provider networks It supports forwarding rates up to 300,000 PPS, and enables the 1-Gbps bus in the VXR routers Full multiservice support is included, and TDM capabilities are included in this model as well The NPE-300 is available only in the VXR line of routers The NPE 400 is the high-end model of processing engine It is designed primarily for serviceprovider duties, and it supports a maximum forwarding rate of 400,000 PPS It supports all of the features of the NPE-300 and, like the NPE-300, is available for only the VXR routers The interface cards in the 7200 line are wide ranging, but are mostly for WAN support duties Note that none of the interface card slots in the 7200 series are used for NPE or I/O controller duties, unlike the slots in some of the switch models (See Figure 12-7 for clarification) For this reason, all four or six slots (depending on the model) are available for interface cards
