Cisco cache and content engines are designed to speed up access to remote content and reduce network traffic across WAN links They do this by performing caching on content located across WAN segments Much like a proxy server, whenever a particular resource is accessed extensively (such as a web page), the cache or content engine stores the document on internal disks Then the next request for the same resource can be retrieved from the disk, rather than through the WAN link This strategy can improve perceived speed and reduce WAN traffic by up to 60 percent in some cases, a valuable benefit for organizations with tight WAN budgets The cache or content engine uses a protocol called Web Cache Communication Protocol (WCCP) to allow for even-more-advanced functionality With this protocol, a cache or content engine can be installed on the network and provide caching services with no change to the client configuration It does this by communicating with Cisco routers that also support WCCP When certain types of content are accessed, the router forwards the request to the cache or content engine The cache or content engine then retrieves the document either from its hard disks or by requesting the document from the router, and then forwards the document to the client If the cache/content engine needs to retrieve the information from the WAN, it may also cache the document to disk, allowing future accesses of the document to be retrieved directly from cache WCCP also allows cache/content engines to be clustered, or chained together as one logical entity, to improve both performance and fault tolerance If one of the cache/content engines in the cluster fails, the others simply pick up the excess traffic and client requests can still be fulfilled Also, if all of the members of the cluster fail, the router simply bypasses the cluster and retrieves the document directly In short, WCCP allows the advanced functionality of caching to be completely transparent to end users Because cache and content engines perform largely the same function as file servers, the hardware resources most important to their function are similar to those of file servers Physical DRAM and disk storage capacity and performance are of primary importance, with processor power running a close second The performance of a cache or content engine is represented by maximum forwarding speed in megabits per second Cisco has a cache or content engine solution providing optimal performance for nearly every environment, from SOHO branches to ISP backbones With this, let's take a look at Cisco's individual product offerings
