The Cisco Secure PIX Firewall system is a high-end, dedicated hardware firewall device capable of protecting networks ranging in size from small offices to large enterprises At its heart, the Cisco PIX Firewall is simply a hardened PC with specialized firewall software The wide availability of the components used in the PIX Firewall allow the device to be competitively priced, while the specialized software image installed on it allows it to be free of security vulnerabilities common to firewall solutions running on top of commercially available general-purpose operating systems As for features, the PIX Firewall includes a number of features designed to secure your network from most threats The primary feature of the firewall is known as the Adaptive Security Algorithm (ASA), and it functions very similarly to the CBAC feature in the IOS Firewall, allowing connections established from the inside to function and denying attempts from the outside to intrude on a dynamic basis The PIX also supports hot standby, allowing redundant PIX Firewalls to fail over to one another with no user disruption Full NAT/PAT support is included, of course, as well as DOS suppression, and nearly every other feature in the IOS Firewall feature set is available The PIX Firewall is available in four models, all with differing performance and expansion capabilities The 506 is the entry-level model in the line, followed by the 515, 525, and 535 models The 506 firewall is designed primarily for branch offices It includes 32MB of DRAM, 8MB of flash RAM, and dual Ethernet (10 Mbps) NICs It can forward at up to 8 Mbps for unencrypted traffic, and at up to 6 Mbps using DES (56-bit) or 3DES (168-bit) encryption The 515 model is designed for situations requiring significantly higher performance and interface expandability, like large regional offices It includes either 32 or 64MB of DRAM, 16MB of flash RAM, dual 10/100 Mbps Fast Ethernet ports (expandable to a maximum of six), and a failover port for connection to a hot standby firewall It can forward at up to 145 Mbps for unencrypted traffic, and at up to 10 Mbps using DES or 3DES encryption Figure 13-7 shows an example of a PIX 515 model firewall
