The other factor that influences depth-of-field is the focal length of the lens The focal length of digital camera lenses, as stated on the lens barrel, is misleading because it is almost always stated as the equivalent of the focal length of a 35mm camera This relation works as far as the equivalent angle of view is concerned However, it is the actual distance of the camera lens to the film plane that determines depth-of-field The shorter the focal length, the greater the depth-of-field The size of the image sensor in most digital cameras is between one-half and one-quarter that of a 35mm film frame As a result, the lens must be one-half to one-quarter the distance from the film plane in order to get the same angle of view At the same time, you get two to four times the depth-of-field If you have a camera that gets less than 3 megapixels of resolution and your lens is zoomed to about 50mm (normal field of view) equivalency, focusing on an object 10 feet away will put everything in focus from about 3 feet to infinity If you are shooting close-ups or portraits and want to blur the background at all, you must shoot at the widest possible aperture It s also a good idea to zoom out as far as possible The latest generation of very high resolution digital cameras have image sensors that are about two-thirds the size of a 35mm film frame These cameras will give you quite a bit more aperture control over depth-of-field because their lens focal lengths have to be longer in order to accommodate the larger physical image size You also can change apparent depth-of-field after you ve shot the picture by using your image-editing program s selection tools and blurring filters (see Tip 64 in 9) Learning to control depth-of-field gives you one method of isolating the subject from its background Sometimes, for example, you want to blur the background and focus in on the nearer subject (as shown in Figure 3-4) At other times, you want everything you are viewing to be in clear focus The aperture setting will give you at least some control over depth-of-field Ensure the Fastest or the Slowest Shutter Speed Because the aperture can limit the amount of light that gets in through the lens, you must adjust the camera s exposure times to compensate Opening the aperture wide will allow for the fastest possible shutter speed in any given lighting condition Faster shutter speeds will accommodate stop-action photography or provide a steady shot when conditions make it impossible to hold the camera still Remember that the aperture settings are inverse to the size of the aperture Larger f-stops produce smaller openings for light
