41 Shoot Movies
As you learned in Tip 20 in 3, switching your camera to video mode enables it to shoot short video clips that can be played back on your camera s preview, your computer s media player, or on the Web You can even record them to tape or DVD and include them in your personal archive If you only need short movies, then you may be able to save yourself the expense of a separate video camera Try out your camera s movie-making abilities and see what you can do
Why Would I Shoot a Movie
As the old saying goes, A picture may be worth a thousand words, but a movie has thousands of pictures Because a movie captures a larger slice of time than a single frame is able to, it is particularly suited for recording something that is changing over time, such as the scoring moment in a sports event or a child s first steps And although you may already own a video camera, you may find there are times when it isn t practical to carry it with you The advantage of a digital camera is that by switching it from single-shot to video mode, you can still capture important events with motion and sound, producing a priceless record (Try that with your conventional camera!) You can download those movie files into your computer, and then e-mail them to relatives and friends or publish them on your Web page Videos also can be a practical tool to use for business purposes For instance, shooting a quick tour through a property can be helpful to a real estate agent and can show much more than static photos The same files can be exported to a database, displayed on a business Web site, incorporated into a presentation, or transmitted via e-mail to other offices or directly to a client Or you could record a demonstration of how to attach two components and post for viewing by service reps in the field The ability to shoot short movies adds another dimension to your picture-taking experience, making your digital camera your portable multimedia production facility
CHAPTER 7: Things You Don t Do with Your Film Camera
How Do I Set Up and Shoot a Movie with a Digital Camera
The rules for shooting a movie with a digital camera are pretty much the same as for a standard video camera, only simpler Following are some guidelines for setting up and shooting a proper movie Set Up the Shot First, you need to know in advance what you want to shoot and make sure it will fit into the time duration limitations imposed by your camera If the subject matter you want to shoot takes 2 minutes and your camera only can shoot video for 30 seconds, you are obviously not going to get it all The video time duration limitations are listed in your camera s manual The camera will also display a countdown meter to tell you how much shooting time you have left The average maximum shooting time for a single movie sequence is about 30 seconds If possible, do a quick run-through before you record the shot This will help you avoid excessive reshoots Be aware of your lighting situation over the course of the entire shooting time Your flash will not be operational when you are shooting a movie (it can t recycle fast enough), so you have to work with available light or have other external light sources When you re shooting inside, you will need a fairly bright and consistent lighting source to get a good exposure You can set up external floodlights to brighten the environment Finally, try to place yourself in a good position relative to what you want to shoot so you won t need to move during shooting Setting Up the Camera Place the camera in video mode (see Tip 20, in 3); if your camera doesn t have video mode, you can use burst mode (see Tip 18, in 3) If you are using burst mode to capture a series of still pictures, you can download the individual frames and use a video-editing program to turn them into a movie The movie won t have the smooth motion of a video, however, and will be more jerky, like a flip-card animation Shooting the Movie in Video Mode Try to remain in a fixed position throughout the shot Holding a digital camera steady while walking about is next to impossible, and you ll end up with something that looks like a Blair Witch Project effect (jumpy and rough) In addition, avoid rapid camera movements unless you want your audience to get queasy The slower frame rates of MPEG movies also increase the negative effect of rapid movement by making the movie jerky If you want to move the camera, pretend you are moving in slow motion or use a video-style tripod that allows for smooth panning and tilting

Relating to movement, use your zoom feature sparingly One of the most common errors the beginner makes in shooting movies is to zoom in and out constantly If it is important to zoom, do it as slowly as you can and only do it once All movement should be subtle If you are staging the movie, use a signal to begin and end action When you are shooting for such a short duration, you don t want to waste valuable seconds Be sure to keep the action within the frame Because LCD screens often refresh too slowly to show a movie sequence smoothly, it is best to use your camera s optical viewfinder Also, be careful of bright backlighting created by windows or lamps, for example, which can throw off your exposure and silhouette your subject If you are recording sound, try to keep a constant distance from the sound source so you don t get big changes in the sound levels If you want to say something while you are shooting, just realize that you are close to the microphone, so talk softly Finally, remember that you can erase any movie and shoot it over if you need to
