Inside your digital camera are specialized light-sensitive chips, called image sensors Image sensors use either Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS) or Charge-Coupled Device (CCD) technology (Ironically, only the newest and highest definition or the cheapest and lowest definition cameras currently use CMOS technology) These chips are made up of arrays of image sensors Each sensor translates the light falling on it into electronic signals, which define color and intensity This information is stored as digital data in a computer data device that s built into the camera or as flash memory on a removable card The data on these cards is translated by computer programs and displayed as color pixels on a computer screen or the camera s LCD Figure 1-2 shows the same image displayed at low resolution and high resolution You can see how the pixels appear more blended at a higher resolution You will notice that each camera comes with a pixel rating, such as 13 megapixels (million pixels) or 32 megapixels on up to 6 megapixels in the newest models More megapixels translate to more individual light sensors on the image chip, which translates to higher image definition, which translates to sharper, clearer pictures Your camera s megapixel rating determines how much detail can be captured in the highest resolution setting You can usually blow up standard 35mm film to 8 10, 11 14, and in some cases 16 20 without seeing too much loss in quality, but go any further and the quality starts to go downhill
