Selections are one of the key components of any good image-editing program A selection defines an area with an interactive tool and surrounds it with a boundary that is delineated by oscillating dashes that look like marching ants Whenever you see those critters marching, you know they surround an active selection Selections limit the operation of almost every function of the editor to the area within the selection boundary This containment lets you decide which selected areas of the image will receive specific operations You can make selections with a number of tools in the Toolbox the Elliptical and Square Marquee tools (geometric), Lasso tools (freeform or geometric), Brush Selection tool (freeform), and Magic Wand (freeform) (See Tip 79 in this chapter for more on the Magic Wand)

A selection lets you isolate any command or action in Photoshop to just that part of the image that s surrounded by the selection marquee Selections let you quickly move, copy, crop, stretch, rotate, and cut any portion of an image You can also copy the selection to a new layer or document, where it can become part of a composite Selections help greatly in creating components Selections can also be inverted, with the result that what was formerly outside the selection (that is, protected) becomes the inside of the selection Masks and selections serve the same purpose The difference is that masks are selections that were saved to a special type of image layer, where they become grayscale images Virtually all image-editing programs permit making selections Only more advanced image-editing programs, such as Photoshop Professional and Painter, also support masks The advantages of masks are that they can be altered with any of the Toolbox tools and that it s easier to alter portions of them in transparency

78 Blend Selections with Feathering
In conventional painting, feathering refers to a method of blending the paint from one area into another with fine bristles and soft, gentle strokes Some painters actually use feathers to do this The effect is much the same in the digital world, but you don t use a feather; you use the Feather command The Feather command value determines how the edge of a selection transitions to the surrounding area If you use no feather value, the selection will have a hard edge The higher the feather value, the wider the area of soft transition at the edge of the selection Figure 11-4 shows the effect of feathering a selection
