The system uses the item category group field of the material master record as the main indicator to determine the item category in the sales order The system uses this field in combination with the sales document type, being processed, for example, as TA It is these two indicators plus an indicator setting the usage of the item category (for example, is this item a text item), plus an indicator determining if another higher-level item exists that will determine the item category in the sales order document This is shown in Figure 3-14 Item categories are created first and then assigned To assign the item categories, follow the menu path

Sales Documents | Sales Document Item | Assign Item Categories The item category determination may be changed manually The allowed manual assignments shown on screen is three values, as seen in Figure 3-14 However, if you select the line and select details you will be able to define up to 11 manual values

It is possible to create your own item category groups (the component of the material master that determines the item category in the sales order) To create an item category group, follow the menu path

These may then be assigned to a material type as a default Thus each material you create that is based on a particuler material type can have a defaulted item category, which can be manually changeable in the material master record This may be allocated by following the next menu path

An item categories usage is defined by SAP when creating a sales order The system determines, for example, that the usage refers to a text item as opposed to a deliverable item when you enter test in the order item rather than a material number Based on this usage, the system will use the item category determination to propose an item category

The higher-level item is another determining factor in item category determination The system finds a higher-level item category by looking at any linkage of items and then tracing back to the main item category For example: A bill of materials (BOM) is a material that is made up of many component materials An example could be a computer, which could be sold as a computer but represented on the sales order as a monitor, a hard drive, a keyboard, and a mouse In a BOM you have a header item, usually an item category group LUMF This would promote a standard item category of, for example, TAP (as seen in Figure 3-15) A sub-item is then proposed as an item category TAN (as seen in Figure 3-15, second line)

In the BOM the sub-items assigned to it may also be standard parts (for example, a keyboard may be sold on its own), thus capable of being resold as normal items if sold alone In this case we would have a standard item category group of NORM, which would be represented in the item category determination structure seen in Figure 3-16

An item category controls how the document item functions each item is split into one or more schedule lines These schedule lines represent when the item will be delivered For example, an order for 100 units may be delivered over four different weeks 25 units each week
