I Descreening Screening applies a filter to compensate for artifacts that come from the printing process Use the screening filter when you scan from a book, magazine, or other printed piece to eliminate these problems Your scanner software may offer a choice of screening for various printing sources, such as magazines, books or newspapers Figure 5-4 demonstrates an image scanned with and without a descreening filter Be cautious of scanning images that you did not create In the United States, most work created in the last 95 years is copyrighted, meaning that only the author of the work has the right to reproduce the work For more information and resources on copyright, see 14 for web sites with more information

It s always better to start larger than your intended image and then scale down rather than to start smaller and scale up If you try to scale up, or increase the size of an image, Photoshop has to stretch the existing image The result can be blurry, and the file size can be larger than the file size of an original scan to that size The exception to this is when you change the resolution of an image, or change only the pixel per inch value

Changing the Size of an Image
To begin, choose Image | Image Size The dialog box, as shown here, opens
Ill 5-2
Before you change the size of any image, make sure that the Constrain Proportions checkbox is checked This ensures that when you change the size of an image, it will change proportionately so that your work doesn t end up looking like a funhouse mirror When you change the width, you ll want the height to maintain the same aspect ratio Once you ve clicked the Constrain Proportions box, you ll see a Link icon appear next to the Pixel Dimensions and Document Size measurements, indicating that the dimensions will change in proportion to each other If you want to change the size of an image, check the Resample Image checkbox, also located at the bottom of the Image Size dialog box Remember that when you click the Resample Image box, your image will be permanently changed It s a good idea to make a backup copy of your image before you resample if you think you may ever need to edit the original image
How to Do Everything with Photoshop 7
Once you ve clicked both the Constrain Proportions and Resample Image checkboxes, all you need to do is to change either the Width or Height value in either the Pixel Dimension or Document Size areas All of the other measurements automatically resize to match the Width or Height value that you have changed
Changing the Resolution of the Image
To change the resolution, or pixels per inch, of an image follow these steps:
1 Make sure the Resample Image checkbox is unchecked 2 Enter the value of the resolution you wish to use As you see below, the
Document Size information changes but the Image Size information does not change This means that the image will print out at a higher pixel per inch setting, but the resulting image will be dimensionally smaller
3 Click OK
Ill 5-3
Cropping a Scanned Image
Often you ll want to crop in on a specific part of an image in order to reduce the size of your image or to eliminate extraneous detail Cropping is a good way to create a focal point in an image so that the main subject stands out
CHAPTER 5: Acquiring Images
Cropping Using the Crop Tool
Click and drag the crop tool from the Photoshop toolbox You ll see a bounding box, as shown in Figure 5-5 This bounding box works exactly the same as the free transform bounding box discussed in the preceding chapter You can scale, move, or rotate the crop area without changing the image itself When you re ready to apply the crop to the image, either double-click within the cropped area, press ENTER, or click the COMMIT icon on the options bar
