The appearance of brush strokes varies depending on whether they have been created with the brush tool or the pencil tool
Using the Pencil Tool
The pencil tool produces hard, rectangular edges with the brush as shown in Figure 6-2 It s generally used to draw geometric shapes The very smallest pencil brush, a 1 pixel brush, is useful for cleaning up small areas in an image, especially for low-resolution web work
CHAPTER 6: Using the Paint and Fill Tools
Using the Eraser Tool
The eraser tool removes color from a layer within an image Use it by clicking and dragging the tool across the area that you want to erase You can set the type of brush stroke to use for the eraser so it works like the airbrush, paintbrush, or pencil tool, giving you softer or harder edges, depending on which option you select Be sure the layer you re working on doesn t have the transparency checked A layer with locked transparency can't be erased
Using the Background Eraser Tool
The background eraser tool erases areas of similar color as you drag over them This is useful, as the name implies, for erasing backgrounds from around an object
Using the Magic Eraser Tool
The magic eraser tool erases areas of a similar color range It s a little less flexible than the background eraser tool, since it offers fewer settings to change the way it interacts with your image

How to Do Everything with Photoshop 7
I Brush Preset Picker Browse a variety of brush presets, from simple, round shapes to photographic images You can also save, load, and edit brushes with this drop-down I Brush Mode You can set the mode of your brush just as you can set the mode of layers, as discussed in 2 Experiment with brush modes to yield some surprising and interesting effects I Opacity Opacity controls the maximum opacity of brush strokes I Flow Flow controls how quickly the painting tool applies the paint Setting flow and opacity for a brush to a lower number can be helpful if you re working in a painterly manner, building up brush strokes as you work Each time you apply another brush stroke over a previous stroke, the color builds up
I Brushes Palette The brushes palette enables you to create and edit many aspects of how a particular brush works You can add texture to create realistic rough chalk effects, alter the range of color a brush produces, or create many more effects
To select from a variety of brushes, first select the paintbrush tool from the toolbox Then click on the brush icon, as shown here, to open the Brush Preset picker, which displays all the available brushes you can choose from You ll find that some brushes give soft effects and some give textured effects To select a different brush, simply click on the brush you want to use At the top of the Brush Preset picker, there is a slider that controls the size of the brush Click anywhere outside the Brush Preset picker window to close it
