The traditional method of broadcast image composition establishes two safe zones within the full image size The Action Safe Zone is the maximum area usable for live matter as our printer friends call it this means anything you want to see in your Graphic should be composed within this reduced image space, typically 5% in from each edge A further reduced space, called the Title Safe Zone, is typically 10% in from each edge The traditional rule is that all titles and text should exist within this smaller zone While this may not be of concern for DVDs that play back on computers (which are capable of imaging the entire Graphic screen), we must compose Graphics for the worst-case playback namely, video monitors or TV sets that overscan, pushing the outer edges of the Graphic image outside of the viewable area

In DVD image design, certain video color issues need to be addressed You cannot arbitrarily use just any color in your Graphic design, as the NTSC color space has far fewer legal colors than your computer One such limitation concerns proper values for black and white In video, black saturation is limited (compared to RGB values), and white saturation is limited to the value, which generates 100 IRE Creating proper, video-legal video blacks and whites involves limiting the Photoshop Values of black and white used in your DVD Graphic You can do this in the Photoshop Color Picker (see Figs 15-10 and 1511)

In the image sample (Fig 15-9), the red zone is the region to be avoided while composing the image The black area describes the outer limit of the Action Safe zone, and the gray area ( Title Safe ) is completely legal for both image and text This file is included in the Goodies folder of the Book's DVD, and can be used as a guide to Menu image composition

A Global Method to Control Black/White Levels
While it is possible to adjust the levels of black and white individually, a more efficient method involves changing the global values of black and white for the entire document at one time This can be done using the Image > Adjustments > Levels command in Adobe Photoshop (see Fig 15-12) The Image > Adjustments > Levels command sequence allows you to globally limit the lower and upper boundaries at one time in a way, it s like running the same color selection operation on ALL blacks and white throughout the Photoshop Graphic document at the same time Once you select the command (don t select Auto Levels by mistake!), you can set the lower boundary to 16 and the upper boundary to 235, and the entire document will be affected (see Figs 15-13 and 15-14) In an unmodified Photoshop document, the maximum black and white levels appear unlimited, as in Figure 15-13
Figure 15-13 Levels as they normally appear (0 255) Figure 15-12 Global Level Adjustments in Photoshop
Adjust the Black Triangle to set the Black point to 16 and adjust the White triangle to set the White point to 235 This will limit the black and white levels to those usable in video and DVD

TIP! How about Video out from your Mac G5 to NTSC for $20 (see Fig 15-15)
This is a much easier method to use than laboriously setting the black and white levels for every layer you create in Photoshop
